Two days had passed, yet no one came looking for Jisung—not even Bangchan. LHe scrolled through social media, hoping, perhaps foolishly, to see something, anything. There were a few brief headlines about his disappearance, and mentions that his so-called husband had been arrested. But that was it. Silence.
He felt a deep shame pressing down on him, heavier than before. The thought echoed relentlessly in his mind: I should’ve died.
"Hmm… Jisung?" Minho’s voice broke through the silence.
"Ah. Hey," Jisung replied, startled from his thoughts.
"You seemed really zoned out," Minho said gently, concern flickering in his eyes.
"Mmh… it’s nothing. Just some thoughts," Jisung mumbled.
"Want to go for a walk?" Minho offered after a pause.
"But… I can’t walk at all. It still stings," Jisung said with a whimper, glancing down at his legs.
"It’s okay. I can push you in a wheelchair," Minho smiled faintly. "My own leg injuries are healed now anyway." He stood up, brushing off his pants.
...
"There’s no one here at all," Jisung murmured, watching a few people stroll past the clinic’s entrance—just some locals with minor infections.
"Hmm," Minho hummed, quietly parking the wheelchair beside a wooden bench and taking a seat next to him.
A moment passed before Minho spoke again, his voice soft. "I heard you tried to… commit. Is that true? Don’t answer if it’s too much. I’m sorry if I’m being intrusive."
Jisung hesitated. Then, with a deep breath, he nodded. "Yeah… actually, my husband…" His voice cracked as he went on, slowly unraveling the pain he had buried deep inside. For the first time in days, the weight on his chest began to lift, just a little.
"I’m so sorry to hear that," Minho said quietly, his voice sincere.
"It’s okay. What about you?" Jisung turned to him. "How did you end up here?"
"I… I tried too," Minho admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
"What?" Jisung asked, staring at the elder with wide eyes.
"Yeah… I tried to commit," Minho said with a soft, bitter chuckle. "But my story’s not as painful as yours."
"If you’re okay with it… you can share it with me," Jisung replied gently, turning the wheelchair to face him directly.
Minho hesitated. Then, slowly, tears began to well in his eyes.
"My family… we’re broke. Deep in debt to some loan sharks. I didn’t even know. My father works in a small shop for daily wages, and I work as a choreographer—teaching dance. But the money I earn… it’s barely enough." His voice cracked. "I had to skip meals just to give them a little more, just enough to get by."
He paused, taking a shaky breath as Jisung reached out and gently patted his back.
"One day, some loan lenders showed up at our door. I was alone at home… and they beat me. Brutally. I still don’t know why it was that bad. Maybe they were just angry, or maybe they wanted to make an example out of me."
Tears streamed freely down Minho’s face now, dampening his cheeks.
"I asked my parents afterward… and that’s when they told me the truth. I fought with them, I screamed… and then I ran away. That was the night we met," he said quietly, wiping his tears with the sleeve of his shirt.
"And the next day…" His voice broke into a hiccup. "I went back home, just to see my parents… hanging—"
His sentence crumbled, swallowed by a sob. Jisung didn’t hesitate—he leaned forward and wrapped his arms around Minho, unable to hold back his own tears.
"And after that… I tried to live alone. But the lenders wouldn’t leave me alone either," Minho whispered, pulling back from the hug. "So… I committed."
"You’ve been through so much, Minho," Jisung said, voice trembling.
Just then, a young woman in a white coat approached them. “Hey!”
Jisung looked up. "Who are you?"
"Doctor here," she said casually.
"But… there was a young man here yesterday?" Jisung asked, confused.
"Shift change. Anyway, Jisung, there’s someone here asking about you. He had your picture… said his name was Bangchan, I think?"
At that, Jisung’s lips curled into a soft, surprised smile.
"Do you want to see him? Or should I send him away?" she asked.
"Please… I want to see him," Jisung said without hesitation.
