It was homeroom the following morning. Without warning, Chabashira-sensei suddenly hit us with one of her signature offhand announcements.
“I have news to share with you all. There was a bit of trouble the other day, an incident between Sudou and some students from Class A. In other words, there was a fight.”
The room burst into chatter. Chabashira-sensei laid the whole situation bare for the class. Her explanation aligned with what Sudou had told me when he came to my room yesterday, except spoken from a position of neutrality.
“But,” Chabashira-sensei continued, cutting through the noise, “that’s not all.”
“There’s more?” Hirata asked, a hint of concern creeping into his voice.
“As it happens, there was another fight. This time, it was between Horikita, who's sitting in the back over there, and a third Class A student.”
Everyone's icy gazes now shifted towards Horikita, who remained as still as a statue.
“Horikita-san got into a fight too? Why?”
“What the hell was she thinking?”
Similar whispers spread throughout the classroom.
“Please everyone. Before we jump to conclusions, let's hear what Chabashira-sensei has to say first,” Hirata said.
“Thank you, Hirata. Now, let me tell you the school's interpretation of the events that happened on the 30th of June, after interviewing all parties involved. Listen closely, because I'm only going to say this once.”
For the first time, Chabashira-sensei’s face, so often devoid of emotion or interest, turned serious. The class, sensing something was up, turned around and gave her their undivided attention.
“At 6:45 p.m., Sudou met up with two Class A students on the school rooftop. There is conflicting testimony on who called the other party there and who started the fight, but it’s clear that Sudou beat up his opposition, knocking his opponents out cold.”
“What? I didn't do that!” Sudou shouted, standing up from his chair. “I mean, sure I bruised them up a bit, but I made sure to hold back! There's no way they got knocked out!”
“You can argue all you like, but the infirmary has already submitted a report. The nurse confirmed both students were rendered unconscious and suffered significant injuries.”
“But—”
The whispers, faint at first, began to swell into low, hostile murmurs.
“It was self-defense, I tell you! It wasn't my fault!” Sudou cried, still unwilling to back down.
“But there's no evidence of that. Am I wrong?”
“What evidence? Why do I gotta be the one to prove my innocence?”
“Because the opposing side has conclusive evidence pointing to your guilt,” Chabashira-sensei replied, her voice laced with exasperation.
“All I know is that I'm innocent. If anything, I should receive a settlement for my trouble.”
“So speaks the accused, but you don't exactly have a high level of credibility right now, wouldn't you say?”
Chabashira-sensei shot Sudou a doubtful look. He lowered his gaze, seeming to realize that pushing any further would be pointless. With a frustrated sigh, he sank back into his seat.
“After the fight, Sudou went to the library for a study session. Ike, Yamauchi, and Horikita were also present.”
Chabashira-sensei was delving deep into the specifics. It was clear the school had instructed her to go over every detail.
