Where am I?
Who am I?
Why won't the fire in my leg stop?
As soon as that thought came to me everything else came too.
I groaned as I woke up and a small look around showed I was in the bioship, and from the feel of it we were moving. I didn't have long to ponder this thought as Robin suddenly appeared in my vision.
"You're awake," he breathed, not quite believing it. "How to you feel?"
"Is this how humans feel when they get covered in fire?" I noticed him struggle to suppress a small grin before I asked, "what happened?"
"The uh," he hesitated then continued, "the alien ship Artemis shot down... it didn't explode."
"I remember that. I meant what happened after."
After letting out a small sigh he explained, "the ship was going to fire on Artemis, but I guess you acted first. You must have pushed her out of the way or something because aside from a few aches she fine." I breathed a sigh of relief at his words and let him finish. "But you didn't get out of the way in time. Your leg, it... well... your leg got hit. Same with the sole of your other foot."
My brows furrowed as I tried to process what he meant. "What? What're you saying? That my leg is gone?" He slowly nodded.
"And we nearly lost you too from the blood loss. You're only awake now because of the bioship keeping you stable."
"I want to see," I muttered, and moved to sit up but an intense wave of pain and nausea had me falling back down again.
"You really shouldn't be moving yet. We're heading to the Hall of Justice to get you treated among other things." Rob took a glance at the front of the ship, "we're almost there anyway."
'Robin, get up here,' M'gann's voice sounded over the mind-link.
He glanced back at me, a strange look in his eyes, and said, "I'd better do as she says."
"Go," I nodded, "I'll listen in." He nodded back and went to the front.
I closed my eyes and focused my hearing to the front of the ship. "She's awake," Robin told the others as he sat down. I could hear their bodies relax as the relief rushed through them. "In a lot of pain, but awake." How did-? "And I thought I was good at hiding it," I groaned, wincing as another wave of agony washed over me.
I felt the ship move as it flew, and heard the new cannon fire twice before we landed. It was then that Robin and the others came back to get me.
"Hey guys," I said, feeling weaker than before for some reason. They didn't say anything, but Kaldur and Rob helped me get up. It was only then that I saw Artemis standing in the back, her hands, knees, and chest covered in blood. My blood. "I'd do it again in a heartbeat, Artemis."
Her eyes snapped up to mine, her expression shocked. "Please, never do that again. I'm not worth it."
"I disagree."
Before she could retort Kaldur stepped in. We really need to get you medical attention. Now." His tone left no room for argument and I let him and Robin help me off the ship.
I heard the soldiers celebrating our arrival before I saw them, but that celebration was cut short once they caught sight of me.
"What happened to her?"
"Is she gonna be alright?"
"Oh man. She's just a kid."
I heard everything they were saying about me. Some of it made me smile; most of it didn't.
