So, what did you want to talk about?” I asked as soon as we got in the car after practice.
Chase sighed and grabbed my hand that was dropped over my lap.
“Let’s just get home, ok?” He asked while rubbing small circles with his finger in the back of my hand with his thumb.
“Okay.” I agreed almost immediately. Damn, this boy could make me jump off a bridge if he really tried.
I had to remind myself that no matter what it would be ok, that the both of us would be just fine in the end… And hopefully together too…
I didn’t remember the ride home being so long before.
Chase cleared his throat as we approached home and I looked at him expectantly.
“My dad called today…” I could tell by his tone that this wasn’t what he really wanted to talk about (Don’t ask me when I started recognizing Chase’s tones of voice) “He is throwing this big, fancy, ball kind of party tomorrow and he would like for us to come, I’m pretty sure that my granddad put him up to it, but do you want to go anyway? We can make fun of all those rich and weird people.”
“Sure.” I agreed halfheartedly, I didn’t want to hear about stupid dinner parties right now.
We got home in silence, Chase opened the door in silence and I headed in in silence. Utter and complete silence.
I sat on the couch and Charlie jumped on my lap, Chase sat next to me and I waited for him to begin talking.
“How is your leg?” He asked suddenly “Is it still hurting?”
I rolled my eyes; I was never a patient person.
“Yes, it’s still hurting! Do you know what would make it hurt less? If you just told me what is on your mind!”
He looked nervous now, Chase Duncan looked nervous and that made me calm down a little.
“Chase? What is really going on?” I asked more quietly this time around.
“Do you know Friday at the party?” I only nodded for him to go on “Well, I was looking for you, I had just noticed that you weren’t there and I set off to finding you, but I found Misha instead” I was so not going to like hearing the rest of this story “She was making a scene, I don’t know, maybe she was drunk, ok, she was probably drunk, but I pulled her away from the crowd and she jumped on me, kissing me with that crazy talk of hers, saying we were meant to be and stuff…” Now he is going to break up with me for her “But I pushed her away. Kimmy, she wasn’t you, no one could ever even compare to you, you are the prettiest, nicest girl I ever met, you are perfect and I’m not, I screw up and I do it a lot, but I love you and I REALLY hope you can forgive me.”
I just looked at him for quite some time after that one, he looked so vulnerable and sad and I could not believe what he had just said, that Chase Duncan of all people thought all that of me, ME!
“Please, Kim, you have to forgive me. I know I’m nowhere near perfect, but…” His voice was so low now that I could almost hear both our hearts beating.
“Shut up.” I said “Just shut up, Chase. I always knew you weren’t perfect and guess what? I never cared. If you promise me that she jumped you… No, if you pinky promise me that she jumped you, then I believe it.”
I looked into his eyes and he started back at me with an emotion that looked weirdly like admiration. Without moving his eyes from mine he wrapped my pinkie with his.
“I promise you, nothing happened.” He said seriously, his eyes begging me to believe him.
“Then nothing happened.” I said sure of it.
He hugged me, he didn’t kiss me or anything like those movies where now you would insert the super-hot sex here, no, he just opened his arms and got me in a huge bear hug, letting me rest my head on his shoulder.
I don’t know how I had gotten here, but I was here. I was in love with Chase Duncan, and I wasn’t just in love with him. I was talking about desperate books and movies love, the kind of love that you want to shout from the top of the Empire State Building so that Santa’s elves in Finland could hear you, the kind of love where when he hurts you hurt and you cannot imagine your life without him, where even breathing without him seems impossible.
I never thought of myself as a hopeless romantic. Before, to me, those couples full on making out on the streets without bothering to notice all the people around them were just rude and the only reason why someone would run after someone else’s leaving train was plain stupidity, but now I knew I was wrong.
You could not help who you fell hopelessly in love with any more than you could stop the rain from falling and you wouldn’t see it coming either, one day you might just find yourself like me, loving and loving every second of it.
Right there I should’ve been scared, I was smart enough to know that this kind of love would only give me trouble, but in his arms I couldn’t imagine what kind of trouble could get to me.
I pressed my face to his chest and placed a kiss there.
I looked up.
“I love you Chase Duncan.” I said sincerely.
“I love you too, Babe.”
And for the first time I wasn’t bothered by the awful nickname, it was just one of the many little flaws that made Chase perfectly suited for me, like he said, he was far from perfect, but then so was I.
