Chapter 5 – Lilia
You know a girl is angry when she uses all her strength to push you off a porch...
Sugar on grapefruits. Some people like it, others don't. Me? I put the whole goddamn sugar bag on it. I like sugar. Sugar's tasty, tasty... like cake... I love cake, but I hate the texture. My favorite cake is this delicious thing my Aunt Sadie invented. It's two devil's food cakes with devil's food pudding in between and devil's food icing on top. It's so delicious, it melts. No really... It legitimately melts. Like, we had to use spoons to eat it. We could have used straws to eat it. It sounds gross, but its really freaking delicious. Like catching fireflies. Fireflies are gross, but their tasty! Don't ask me how I know what they taste like, I was a weird kid... When I was a kid, I use to make mud pies, and then actually eat them. I like eating sweets. Pie is delicious. While eating the pie flashes of faces started to pop up... All these memories swirled around in my head as I started to emerge from my dream...
I smiled as the sun bathed my face in warmth. Wait a second.... My eyes flashed open and I focused in on the picture on my bedside table next to my phone. My phone beeped again but I ignored it. I take the picture and see that Keaton and I are both laying on the couch. I'm obviously asleep but Keaton isn't. He's got his arm around my shoulders and his left arm is playing with my hair. His eyes aren't focusing on the person that took but instead he's focusing on me. We both look really happy and content. I smile as I take the picture and pull out a picture frame. I quickly replace the picture that came with the picture frame and put in the picture of Keaton and me.
My phone buzzes again and I check who's calling. Jayne, my best friend is calling me. She's currently backpacking through Ireland right now sooo... It's a miracle that she's calling me. I jump for the phone and pick up, “Hello?”
“Lilia?” Jayne asks. Her voice is faint and the static is horrible. The sound of cars and angry voices are heard in the background.
I smile. I can already picture her heart shaped face smiling in the sun while her curly hair reflect it's rays. Ireland must be so grand compared to dim Colorado. Ireland full of so many adventures... And hot guys. “Ya I'm here!” I practically shout into the phone. I start picking off the little fuzzies off of my shirt.
“Finally! Do you know how many times I've tried to get a hold of you for days? But whenever I do your mom tells me your off running with some guy... Sooooo.... Who is he? Is he Caleb? Or have you been flirting with some new mysterious stranger behind Caleb's back ” Jayne asks. I hear her laughing.
“I'll tell you when you get home... When is that?” I ask her in a strained voice. It's a good thing my mom hasn't told her about the incident yet. I want to explain everything to her in person. Everything I have seen and expiernced in the last couple of days alone even though she's been gone for a while.
Jayne laughed and then sighed in frustration, “Well... the thing is... I misplaced my passport in my Grandmother's house. So... I don't know.”
I start laughing all over again. The thought of her misplacing her passport and being stranded in Ireland makes me wonder and laugh, “Well hurry up... I miss you.”
Jayne sighs in frustration and snorts, “I'll try, I'll try. I'll get bloodhound to sniff out my passport. Alright? That ok with you?”
I nod and then I remember she can't see me, “Perfect. But... How do you misplace a passport?”
"Think about it. It's smaller than a book and thinner than a wallet. How can you not misplace that bloody thing?"
"Your supposed to keep it in a safe, un-misplacable case or something. That way you won't misplace it," I remind her.
"Oh it's not like you've never lost anything!"
I shake my head, "I have but I usually find it before anything bad happens!"
"Well shit. I am soooo sorry Ms. I-am-so-perfect-and-I-don't-ever-loose-anything-besides-my-sanity!"
"Oh shut up."
“Ok well I gotta go. My grandmother's four rabbits are eating me alive for the carrot in my hand. Bubye!”
“Bye Jayne!”
Jayne hung up quickly as another angry voice interrupted us. I smiled in satisfaction of having talked to my friend for the first time in a month. She's always wanted to go and see all of Ireland. I'm happy for her but I feel lonely. With no best friend over, the guest bedroom is empty. Yes... She does sleep over for days and days. It's like having a sister but we don't fight like normal sisters do. I would know, she has four little sisters. I look at my wall of pictures and I can easily pick out thirty pictures of us growing up together.
I got up from my bed and walked over to the bathroom. My hair already a wavy mess. I put wave enhancer into my hair which is really just a mixture of hairspray and leave in conditioner. The sea of my hair looks even more untamed but not frizzy which is good. I put on some eye liner but no mascara. My eye lashes are long and heavy enough. I put on some Chapstick and walked to find a cute outfit in my dresser. I took out a tank top and some dark shorts and paired it off with a couple of necklaces with charms.
“Lilia come down here!” my mom shouted.
I ran down the stairs to see my mother standing at the door with a bouquet full of blue daisies and a huge frown on her face. Caleb is standing in the doorway with a single rose in his hand, “Lilia... Can I please talk to you... Alone?”
I shake my head, “No... I don't think that would be best. I want you to leave me alone. Stay away from me.”
Caleb takes another step into my house. Anger spikes in me and I ran at him. I take the red rose and start smacking him with it. I shoved him out of my doorway and off my porch and he landed on his ass on the ground. He looked astonished at my anger but all I did was give him a sneer. It took all my strength but finally he left. I kept on pushing him so hard that sweat started to form above my forehead. I turned back to look at my mom who was smiling, “That's the spirit! Now what do you want for breakfast?”
I shrug, “French toast strips?”
My mom nods still beaming as she starts to walk to the kitchen. “Um mom... Did you take the picture of Keaton and me on the sofa?” I ask her.
My mom turns back and winks. What the hell is that supposed to mean? I mean I looked at the picture and we both seem very unaware of the camera. A more interesting question is how did i end up in his arms totally unconsious.
