Chapter Nine – Keaton

Being attracted to someone is not a choice...

I did not just do that...

No I mean I wish I didn't do that. I punched Caleb down and he fell down in a heap and he dragged Lilia down with him. I look at him and take him by the collar and stared at him. If looks could kill I would be bringing him back, over and over again, from the lowest pits of hell only to kill him again to succeed in sending him back. Something about this guy rubs me the wrong way. It feels as if he's doing everything he possibly can to harm and get Lilia back even though she doesn't want him back. I can tell by the terror and disgust that cloud her face every time she even thinks about him. I take a closer look and see that his eyes are filled to the brim with anger. This is the 'glass is half empty' kind of guy, I just know it.

“What do you want shit face?” Caleb spits in my face.

I take my free hand and punch him in the face, “That was the first thing I wanted to do. The second thing: What do you want with Lilia?”

Caleb barks out a laugh, again spitting in my eye. I punch him in the gut again, “I will do that again, harder, if you don't quit spitting in my face. I don't feel like getting any type of disease from your infected body fluids.”

“I want her back.”

“That is such a lie. I know what you are. No one is this unusually strong.” He's a fucking nymph. There are no such things as faeries, angels, demons, vampires, or other mythological bullshit. We, the nymphs, are all those things. It's only the human imagination that lets use be portrayed as different things so we become them... At least for an hour or two.

Caleb's eyes widen and then snap into a collected calm and a smile plays on his lips. Anger courses through me. I don't like his smile or his stare. It's a pedo's stare. “Well then... She's the last. I'll repeat it slow. The. Very. Last. Decedent. Of. Echo.”

This is not new information, I think to myself. The weird, creepy, angelic voices have visited my dreams once or twice almost making me shit in my sleep. How they do that? I don't know and I want to know how to stop them. But I guess it's better to do their bidding than to object them. If they can posses Lilia and then just leave her like an old toy, I'd rather not cross them and end up waking up in the middle of a random road with an eighteen wheeler heading my way. That would be some way to wake up. I look down at Caleb and give him a bored look, “And?”

“Don't you want to mate with her? Don't you want to hone into her powers and use her to your full extent? Don't you want to be the most powerful of the six male nymphs in the world? It would be wonderful to be the savior of our race!” Caleb rants enthusiastically.

“Uhhhhh... No. I don't feel like treating anyone like a sack of meat except you right about now. Night,” I smile politely and throw him head down onto the sidewalk. Caleb shudders and then lapses into unconsciousness. Finally! Less of him to deal with at the moment. What I would give to get rid of him for the rest of my long life. A shearing pain practically starts to split open my head.

You are supposed to protect Lilia. Don't make me regret saving your pathetic life only to kill my only family! A violent voice screams into my head. My hands cover my ears but nothing helps. Finally the pain is finally pushed out and I look around in relief. I look down at Lilia and terror shoots through me. No wonder the thing screamed at me. I crouch down next to Lilia and start to shake her a little bit. Her eyes flutter open and relief spreads throughout me. A smile spreads onto my face as she looks at Caleb with suprise and then at me in gratitude. “Lilia... Are you OK?” I whisper.

She nods and then slowly starts to get up. Immediately my arms wrap around her waist as I help her up. My heart jolts a little bit as her thin, fragile arms circle around my torso. What the hell is going on? I am Keaton Grace. I do not fall for girls this fast or this easily. I shake my head as I start to chuckle at Lilia nodding her head against me. “I'm fine. A little sore and a little more hairless but fine.”

I chuckle again, “Good. Now lets get out of here before he wakes up and tries to provoke me again. I don't wanna give him a concussion just yet. Not until he really deserves one.”

“Trust me... he deserved it.”

We both start laughing. “I brought my car so I can just follow you to wherever... Do you want to come over for the night. I'm sure my mom will be fine with it if I ask her.”

I think about it for a second. It's between me going home and spending the night settling fights between my sisters or spend the night hanging out with Lilia. Not a tough choice. I'm start nodding before I made my mind up. I smile as she takes my hand and squeezes it. “Good. I don't want to be alone and my mom isn't going to be home until a lot later,” she smiles up at me. I smile and take a closer look at her. Lilia has these big doe eyes that just do something to me. Maybe it's the way holds most of her emotions in them but always musters up trust in everyone. Plus her eyes grow bigger as she looks up at me. Lilia is so small. My smile goes wider as my eyes absorb more of her features.

“What are you thinking of?” Lilia asks and looks up at me curiously as we continue walking to the library parking lot.

I look at the parking lot for a second and spot her car... At least I think it's her car. It's starting to get dark out. A small smile makes it's way onto my face as coherent thoughts form in my mind. “I was thinking about you actually...” I smile.

Lilia smiles widely and fully, “Really?” Amusement bounces off of her voice and makes me laugh at her excitement.

I nod. I pause to think of something, “I was actually thinking of all the possible answers you would have if I asked you out... I want to be prepared for the worst you know.”

Lilia's expression is priceless. Her eyes are wide and her mouth is slightly open while her cheeks begin to turn an interesting shade of red. Lilia breaks her stare with me and looks down at the sidewalk as we begin to approach her car. We're in the parking already? I ask myself. “Well if you never ask... You'll never know my answer,” she replies quietly. Is she embarrassed? She should not be embarrassed! This is more embarrassing for me, especially if she says no. Lilia is almost never embaressed... I don't think I've ever seen her embarrassed.

I take a deep breath to calm down my annoying nerves and slow down so I can fully look at her, “Lilia... Would you like to go on a date with me?”

Lilia doesn't answer at first which makes me nervous. I continue to look at her as she leans against her car and fidgets around with her hands. My nerves start to bunch up in wierd places as I continue waiting for her answer. Lilia sighs and looks up at me with a big smile, "Is the suspense killing you yet?" My eyes widen at her response. That's it? That's it! What the hell? "And... Yes."

I look at her in astonishment, "You just put me through two whole minutes of pure, agonizing torture just so you can see me squirm and then you say yes?"

Lilia nods and tries to hold in her laugh.

I shake my head. That did get me going though. Who knew Lilia has a conniving side?
