"You ok Lina?" I nodded. My face ached and my throat felt as if sharp barbs were along every surface, digging into my flesh. I breathed softly, trying to stay awake. "I'm trying to figure a way out of here, I promise."
"How long have I been here, Garth?" My voice was a hoarse whisper. He looked away and scratched the back of his neck.
"It's been about three months now." I sighed and laid back. Three whole months. The shackles on my wrists and ankles clinked as I tried to get comfortable. They always had to be resized because Vivian only fed me enough to be kept alive. "Look Lin, I know it's hard but you can't die on me, I'd never forgive myself." I choked on my laugh.
"You're the one that brought me here Garth, you forgive yourself for that?" I saw his Adams Apple bob as he swallowed hard.
"I hadn't thought about that."
"'Course you didn't." Swallowing became a chore, my saliva being thick and unyielding. Days began smearing together, hours ticking away until my life would come to an end. I couldn't tell when I was sleeping or awake, reality became fuzzy, unnatural. Sometimes Alexander's face would float across my mind, those perfect blue eyes, the blackest hair I'd ever seen, a nice, strong jaw. Sometimes it was Mike, the softness of his face, the gentle way he'd talk. I hated them both in this instant which was selfish of me but honestly I didn't give a damn.
"Look I'm really sorry Lina, it was just a way to keep my family and those I love from perishing, obviously that didn't work out." His shoulders sagged as he let out a shaky breath. I felt sorry for him, I didn't know why, I'm the one being torturued but I still longed to reach out and push those red locks out of his face and tell him it's ok. I didn't do that.
"Yeah, well, why don't you run back to Vivian with your tail between your legs like the coward you are." I spat, rage consuming me. It wasn't necessarily rage aimed toward Garth but he was here and I needed to let out this pent up anger.
"You don't mean that." He whispered, hurt flashing in those bottomless green eyes.
"I do. You make empty promises of escape but here I am, wasting away, here to amuse her majesty, queen-bitch Vivian." My words sounded clipped and broken, like I'd given up. Maybe I have.
The clicking of heels signalled Vivian's arrival. God, if I don't hear or see another pair of heels it will be too soon! A serpentine smile slithered it's way across her ruby red lips as she took in my condition.
"Well aren't you the loveliest rose in the garden?" She purred.
"Mh, well, I know who is the thorniest." Rage and hurt flickered in her eyes so quickly I thought I had imagined it.
"Such a smart girl. Let's see what that smart mouth got you, shall we?" I knew exactly what she meant but Lord do I wish I didn't.
Alexander's P.O.V.
"Alexander?" Cameron's voice came out from the small rectangular box.
"Cameron? I stared at the box as Cameron answered.
"When did you get a cell phone?"
"Someone told me it would be practical." I rolled my eyes at Mike, who stood smirking at me from the side of the car.
"I have good news and I have bad news." My lips pursed. This can't be good.
"Give it to me straight as the kids say." Mike chuckled quietly. I made an obscene gesture before turning my back to him.
"We found Lina."
"What?" I held the phone tighter, my throat constricting. Rozalina.
"A... Contact of mine spotted her on a tour he was on. She doesn't look good Alex." He was quiet. I know Cameron doesn't particularly care for Rozalina but he cares for me and because I care for her he has to tolerate Roze.
"But she is alive?" I absentmindedly began to chew on the inside of my cheeks.
"From what he tells me yes."
"Then that is all that matters." Mike had made it to my side, silently listening to Cameron and I's conversation. "Where is she Cam?" Cameron let out a low breath.
"She's in Romania. In the Moarte Liliac Castle to be exact."
"Romania!" I started to pace. "She's all the way in Europe? She's near the Council no less!"
"Calm down my friend."
"Calm down? Calm down! You may not understand this friend but I love this woman though she may not love me. She has become my lifeline so no I will not calm down."
"Dont do anything rash Alexander." Cameron's voice was deathly quiet. "If you go out on your tangent you may put yourself along with Rozalina in danger."
He's right you know, nothing good comes of poor planning. Mike invaded my thoughts. I covered the mouthpiece of the phone.
"And how would you know? You're dead." I hissed.
That's harsh.
"Just wait for the rest of us to get to you ok? Once we're all together we'll come up with a plan to get Lina back." I knew what Cameron was saying made sense but my mind focused solely on getting Rozalina back. What I wouldn't give to breath in her scent, touch her soft skin, see those big beautiful eyes. "You still there Alexander?"
"What? Oh uh yeah." Cameron's voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
"Just please promise me you're not going to fall off of your rocker and charge over there by yourself."
"I promise Cameron." My fingers were crossed behind my back. What he doesn't know won't hurt him.
"Just stay where you are, we'll be there soon. Goodbye."
"Bye." I pulled the phone away from my ear. "How do I turn the damned thing off?" Mike pointed to a glowing red button in the bottom that said End. I climbed into the car, getting ready to drive to the airport.
Where are we going? Mike asked.
"We're going to get Rozalina back." I turned onto the highway, the stars glittering in the night sky. "We're going to Romania."
