Summary: Candy, candy, cars.
As we all landed again, soft, crackly, upbeat music fills my ears and I look around.
"Oh..."
"My..."
"Candy!"
I looked around with a wide beaming smile. "This is exactly like how I imagined it!"
Jax walked up behind me with a smirk. "I have a feeling this was your suggestion, sugarcube."
I couldn't hear anyone right now. I was so excited.
"What even is this?" Pomni asked softly, looking around inquisitively.
A beaming, loud voice calls over in a speaker-like voice. "Racers! Choose your cart at the starting line!"
There were just enough cars for each of us, and a few NPCs, lined up in front of a pink and white checkered line.
One cart was made of swirling red and blue licorice with yellow accents, another was purple marshmallow with pink wheels and a smile on the front made of candy corn, and I knew those were Jax and Pomni's. I looked around at the other's cars before noticing the car shaped as a strawberry with chocolate drizzle and green leaves on the back. I knew that was mine.
I hopped into the car and started it, the engine revving loudly as did the others. The NPCs were cheering from the sidelines, looking much like the NPC's from Pomni's second adventure, Candy Canyon Kingdom.
"Good luck, everybody!" Ragatha shouted with a nervous smile.
"You're gonna need it, Raggy. I can't wait to crush all of you," Jax said sadistically, a wide smirk on his face.
"As if, Jax. I'll see you at the finish line!"
A large number appeared above our heads, indicating the race was about to start.
"3"
"2"
"1"
"GO!"
Engines roared as we all took off, fighting for first place.
Driving this cart felt natural to me, and I'm not sure why. I look over to my side and see Jax slowly overtaking me, so I use my speed up to make sure he doesn't get past me.
Kinger, who was little ways behind us, noticed a field of candy butterflies and stopped his cart, causing Ragatha to crash into his back end.
"Aw, man," I heard as we drove further away.
I was distracted by the colorful environment around me, not realizing my cart was slowing down until Jax's horn blares right beside me, taking me out of my awe state.
"See ya, loser!" he yells as he shoots past me, his engine revving loudly as he drives away.
"Damn," I mutter, and suddenly, my engine putters as my car slowly comes to a stop in the middle of the track.
"What? No, no, no! Why is it stopping?" I sigh. Why did it have to be me? In my own adventure?
As hard as I pressed on the gas, I should've sped off at 0-60 in milliseconds. But I remain unmoving.
Here I was, stuck in the middle of the pathway, an idle vehicle in a race, in my own suggestion.
This kind of thing always happens to me.
Jax was too far ahead to even notice I wasn't behind him anymore, Ragatha and Kinger were way back, and I didn't even know where Pomni or Zooble were.
That is, until her car sped past mine in under a second.
I didn't even try to call out.
I saw her car stop somewhere in the distance, make a u-turn, and make its way closer to mine.
"What happened?" she asked when she parked her car next to my stationary one.
"It just...died? I'm not really sure," I said sadly.
Then, she drove past me, the opposite way. I wondered what she was doing before I felt a jerk, realizing her cart hit mine.
"What the hell- what are you doing, Pomni?"
"I'm getting you across the finish line. If anyone deserves to cross it with their own cart, it's you. Not Jax, not Ragatha, not Kinger, not me, you. I saw it not too far off up there. We'll at least make it before Ragatha and Kinger do."
My eyes watered a little. Why was she being so nice?
She started pushing her car with mine, slowly but surely getting us closer and closer to the finish line. "You didn't have to do this, y'know. You could've just gotten second place. I'm sure the adventure would've ended eventually."
I felt another jerk, and it seems Pomni did, too, and we both looked back to meet eyes with Ragatha in her cart, albeit a little banged up, and Kinger sitting on top, cartless. "Hey guys!"
"What are you doing? Why didn't you go ahead?" Pomni asked, confused.
"Well, I figured we'd help give you a little more of a push. I...didn't feel like winning anyway," Ragatha smiled genuinely at me, making my insides fill with warmth. They really were helping me.
"You guys really don't have to do this," I say as we begin to move faster and easier because of the extra help.
"We don't, but...we want to," Pomni smiled. I couldn't help but feel my cheeks heat up a little. Her smile was so sweet.
Minutes later, we cross the finish line, my cart in front, Pomni behind me, Ragatha and Kinger in the back with Gangle finally tailing up behind them, fond of taking her time. Still no sign of Zooble.
Numbers representing our spot in winning appear above our heads, Jax standing far off with a 1 over his head.
"Wow, you guys look AWFUL! What happened out there?" He asked with a smirk.
"Wouldn't you like to know," I said, with a little tone before going over to talk to Ragatha, Pomni, Gangle, and Kinger.
I missed Jax's look towards me in confusion and slight hurt.
{ZOOBLES POV}
I comfortably rest my feet up on the dash, still back at the starting line, not a care in the world, no Jax to f&%k with me.
That is, until I get sucked into yet another portal, a slur of curses leaving my invisible mouth.
