This couldn't be real. You couldn't believe it. She was actually leaving you.
"I'm sorry, I just don't love you anymore. I think we should break up. You're too much to deal with."
That's what she said. She looked straight into your eyes and said those few words that you'd hoped you would never hear. She didn't love you anymore. After everything. The stormy nights where you held on tight to eachother like you would somehow be ripped apart. Or the cold winter mornings where she would kiss the tip of your nose before you left the house.
Everything. She was just leaving. Just like that. Like it meant nothing to her the whole time. Your heart had never felt so heavy. Not during previous breakups, not when you lost friends, nothing compared to losing her. You didn't even know what to do when she was gone for a day, how were you supposed to go about every single day without her?
She had her things packed. Standing at the door ready to leave. She didn't even look sad. There were no tears in her eyes, no sense of sadness whatsoever. And maybe that hurt you even more. Because maybe that meant that the whole time she didn't feel the same love that you felt for her.
Was it your fault? Had you done something to make her stop loving you? She didn't tell you anything. She just walked out the door without looking back. Without saying it. No 'I love you, I'll be home soon.', nothing. She was gone. And You were left in a house that was haunted by the ghost of what your love once was. No matter where you went in the house, you felt her there. You had a different memory no matter where you went, she was there.
You ended up laying on the ground, choking on your own gasps and tears. She really left. She was gone. Forever. And the worst part? You couldn't hate her for it. You still loved her so much. You always would.
Your eyes shot open. Tears immediately fell. She was gone. You were alone. You needed her. But what you didn't realise? It was a nightmare. She was right there next to you, sleeping. When you looked over to see her sleeping figure, you cried harder. Because it wasn't real. She was still there. She hadn't left. But what if she was going to? What if she felt like she had said in the dream.
All you could do was cry into your hands. You tried to stay quiet so that you wouldn't wake her up, but it was no use. If you didn't wake her up, you would be up crying for the rest of the night. You just really hoped she wouldn't mind.
"Baby?" You whispered. Just gently. You didn't want to startle her. Your voice was shaky, and so were your hands as you reached out to hold one of hers.
When she didn't wake up, you couldn't help but just curl up again, as close as you could get to her. You buried you face in the hoodie that she was wearing, wrapping your arms around her waist. She felt warm, safe, like home. A home you hoped to never lose.
When you continued crying (into her chest this time), that was what woke her up. You heard her stir a little, and felt her shift around slightly, so you held your breath, trying not to make any noise. She knew though. She always knew.
"Baby?" She rasped, running one of her hands up your back, "What's going on? Why are you up? It's like.. Six AM."
All you could do was let out another sob into her chest. You held onto her hoodie tighter, like she might disappear if you even slightly loosened your grip.
"Oh baby. You can't sleep? What is it?" She whispered to you, brushing your hair back away from your face.
"I had.. A nightmare." You hiccuped, crying harder.
She sighed and pulled you impossibly closer, kissing the top of your head a few times. You stayed quiet for a while before she spoke again.
"I love you so so much, you know that right?"
You nodded, but didn't verbally reply. Your nightmare was still making you doubt it.
"What was the nightmare about? Would you be able to tell me about it, please?" She slowly moved you away from her, but you didn't let go of her. You couldn't.
"Please. Please don't. I really love you I promise!! You.. You told me that you didn't love me anymore, and that I was too much. And m'sorry for waking you up!!" You were sobbing. Practically begging her. You knew it wasn't real, and that she wasn't leaving, but you couldn't forget the dream. It hurt so bad.
"Woahhh.. Baby. Angel. I promise you it was just a nightmare, I'm not going anywhere. I'm not leaving you. I love you forever, you are never too much. You're so perfect for me, always."
You curled in closer to her, just crying it out. When around fifteen minutes passed of her whispering sweet nothings to you, and you were still crying, she suggested something.
"How about we go out somewhere? For a walk while it's still early. Maybe the beach? We can watch the sunrise together if you want. Cmon. I don't think you're going to be able to sleep for a bit considering how upset you are, I think it'll make you feel a bit better. Kind of ease your thoughts a little?"
You nodded against her, sniffling and attempting to sit up and wipe your still falling tears. You felt tired, but going to the beach with her sounded so much better than laying in bed crying about a nightmare you'd had. So you agreed.
It didn't take either of you long to get ready, you dressed in warm clothes since it was still early, meaning it would be a lot colder. You were about to tie your hair up to get it out of your face, but she offered to do it for you, and why would you say no?
You dragged a blanket along with you to the car. The beach wasn't that far, but you were both too tired to walk anywhere at that time. She drove, while you curled up in the passenger seat. You'd calmed down a lot, you were really glad to have her in your life.
I mean, you just woke her up super early, crying because you had a silly nightmare, and then she comforted you for a while before offering to take you to the beach so that you could calm down. You felt like you didn't deserve someone as good as her.
You arrived within a few minutes, leaving the blanket in the car before wandering down to sit near the shore (not too close though since you didn't want to get hit by the water).
She sat first, then let you sit between her legs, your back to her chest, her arms wrapped around your waist. It was a little light outside. The sun was soon to rise. The air smelt fresh. You felt at peace. In your girlfriend's arms, listening to the waves, slowly grabbing handfuls of sand and letting it trickle through your fingers as the two of you spoke.
You told her more about the nightmare in detail as she held you. It still hurt thinking about it, but she was there. She wasn't going anywhere.
"I love you always. My baby. You're so amazing. I know you were worrying, and I get it, but I will forever mean it when I say I'm not going anywhere. I love you so much." She kissed your neck a few times.
You held onto her hands that were resting in your stomach, and leaned back against her more.
"You're too good to me." You pouted, leaning up to kiss her lips.
"Shhh. Nonsense. You deserve the world. And I promise to always give you that and so much more." She whispered against your lips.
"I love you forever, baby. I'm so lucky to have you."
As the sun rose, and the air started to warm, you realised something. She adored you. She wasn't going anywhere. She loved you just as much as you loved her. The nightmare wasn't real, and it never would be.
