You were sick of everything. You felt so exhausted, so drained, and you didn't want to do anything anymore. It hurt too much. You spent mornings and afternoons drifting in and out of sleep. You spent nights curled up in bed, in your dark bedroom, with random shows playing in the background. You never paid any attention to them, though. All you did was stare at the wall or ceiling for hours upon end before you fell asleep, just for the same cycle to repeat when you woke up.
You had stopped checking your phone, stopped charging it, it sat on your bedside table turned off for days. Nobody knew what had happened. No one knew why you weren't answering, and why their messages eventually stopped going through. You didn't bother to tell anyone. Not because you didn't want to, but because you just couldn't bring yourself to accept that it was real. And because you didn't want to do anything other than just lay in bed either sobbing your heart out, or feeling nothing at all.
All you wanted to do was disappear. You needed to disappear. It felt as if you didnt matter anymore. You didn't recieve any calls from anybody. Well, maybe you had. You were unsure since your phone was forever on do not disturb, and it probably died a couple days ago anyway. But you were assuming nobody had noticed your absence online, or just in general. And if they had noticed, you hoped it was bringing them more happiness than what your presence could bring.
Of all people, you most definitely knew she hadn't called. Your now ex girlfriend. You put everything into the relationship. Even when you felt mentally and physically exhausted, you were still there when she needed you, even if it did end with her throwing insults at you whilst looking dead in your eyes, followed by a half assed apology. You still continued to be there for her when you felt like you had nothing left to live for, because despite the way she treated you, you were still so in love with her. You loved her so much it almost hurt. But she was gone. Ended things out of nowhere, when you thought things were going well between the both of you.
You knew it was for the better. You knew you needed to let her go, and then you could be treated way better. But you wanted her. And she was gone. You stopped messaging her after the first full day of being broken up. You realised that if you continued to stay in contact, it would just hurt more in the long run. So you put your phone down, and still hadn't picked it back up even days later. Maybe because you didn't trust yourself enough to keep from pressing that call button to possibly hear her voice again. Or maybe because you knew you couldn't let your best friend see you so hurt.
But it was too late to even start thinking about that, because there was a sharp knock at your door that almost echoed through the entire house. You didn't want to get up. Whoever it was could come back another time if it was that important. But they weren't giving up. They knocked, and knocked. They didn't give up. So with a loud sigh, you dragged yourself out of bed. The weight of your sadness felt heavy. You could feel it dragging along with you through the empty house. It was attached.
The knocking still hadn't stopped by the time you reached the front door, so you slowly opened it. Just slightly, to see who was there. Of course. Your best friend. At least she cared enough to notice. You let her in without saying a word. Your mouth felt dry, and even if you wanted to speak, you knew the words would just get stuck in your throat.
The second she was inside, she spoke. Like she'd been dying to say this for weeks. But it hadn't been weeks. Maybe it could have been if she didn't show up. Maybe you would have stayed in bed forever, just like the previous few days.
"Where have you been?! I've been blowing up your phone, my messages stopped going through, I was worried. What's going on?"
She must have noticed how pale you were. The way the entire house was trapped in darkness. How your eyes were so puffy either from crying, or the constant sleepless nights. She noticed the knots in your hair. And she especially noticed how you looked completely and utterly drained. It was easy to see that the sadness practically loomed over you. Like it had taken control of you. Got rid of who you were not even a week prior, and replaced her with someone not even remotely similar.
