You'd broke up ages ago. Over a year. You'd moved on. You didn't know if she had. You didn't want to know. You both agreed to stay friends, but that's never the case, is it? You hadn't talked in months. And maybe that was okay because you had a new girlfriend. You loved her. She loved you. Kind of. But not like your ex used to.

Things seemed good between you both, she seemed sweet at first, and you fell for her. But she slowly started getting meaner. If you said one thing she disagreed with, she was mad. Yelling at you for no reason. If you even breathed wrong near her she would yell. You told yourself that it was normal, but it clearly wasn't. But you loved her, so you stayed. Or you thought you loved her. That's what you told yourself.

Despite you and your ex being broken up for over a year, when your new girlfriend got mad at you, your mind couldn't help but flick back to how well your ex treated you. How she would have never done anything like that. She wouldn't have hurt you. The breakup between you both wasn't horrible, it was just that neither of you were in the right place mentally to give eachother what you both needed.

You missed her sometimes. The way she kissed you. The way she lowered her voice when you were sad, speaking in the gentlest tone you'd ever heard anyone speak in. How you could tell how much she cared about you and loved you, even when she was going through a rough time. But things happened for a reason. That was all you could tell yourself.

You often wondered where things went wrong. Where you went wrong. Was it you? Or was it just bound to happen eventually? None of that mattered now though. Because you were with someone new. You loved her. You and your ex didn't work out. Some things are just meant to end.

But it got to a point where you had to tell yourself that you were happy with your new girlfriend. That you were happy with life. But you weren't. You were lying to yourself. Blinded by 'love'. When you both had arguments, you wanted to call your ex. Maybe message her? But that was wrong. What would you say?

'Oh hey, just had an argument with my girlfriend, made me remember that you would've never done that, I miss you!'

No. So it built up. The lack of love from her. Lack of care. She wasn't her. Wasn't remotely similar to her. And that was painful. It hurt way more than you ever wanted to admit.

One day, after a particularly bad argument, you left your shared home, sobbing. And only one thing circled your mind.

'She would have never done this. She wouldn't have let you leave.'

The cold air hit your skin immediately. Only dressed in a t-shirt and shorts. In fact, the shirt was probably an old one you stole from your ex years ago. You couldn't quite remember. The more you walked, the more you were shivering. You couldn't turn back now though, it was too late. You didn't want to see her anyway. So you just continued walking.

You didn't actually know where you were going, you just walked. Anywhere. The tears didn't stop. Your hands shook. Phone just dead weight in your pocket. You probably had missed calls from your girlfriend, ones she wished you answered. Not because she wanted to say sorry, not because she was worried, but so that she could yell at you some more. Or so that she could sweetly tell you to come home and that she was 'so sorry', just to continue the argument the second you stepped inside.

Your vision was blurred as you walked faster. You didn't mean to show up outside her house. It was just habit at this point. You couldn't stay away from her any longer. You needed someone familiar. Something familiar. Her love and her comfort. Her voice. You needed her.

Before you knocked on the door, you hesitated. You had no idea if she had a new girlfriend or not. Or if she was even in. Or how she'd react when she saw you. Yet you still knocked. It was as if your body was on autopilot. If you were thinking straight, maybe you wouldn't be on her doorstep, a teary mess, hoping she wouldn't slam the door in your face.
