Chapter 9
I almost dropped the plate I was drying. My stunned expression must have shown clearly because Sarah came over and slapped Clay with a towel.
"Don't scare the poor girl like that!"
He laughed and grabbed my hand, pulling me out the front door.
David was on the porch, and he warned us.
"Don't go to far Clay, and keep alert!"
Clay just gave a thumbs up over his shoulder, and pulled me beyond the tree line.
It was a beautiful day, the sun was shinning but it wasn't hot an there was a slight breeze.
Once we were out of sight, Clay told me to change here, and he would go on up ahead to change.
As he left me alone, he called over his shoulder,
"I would remove your clothes first, so they don't get shredded in the change!"
I gave the back of his head a glare. I wasn't that stupid.
I quickly undressed, and stashed my clothes in a pile, hiding them under a small briar bush.
I kneeled down on both knees and though about becoming a wolf. My wolf. I pictured the gray fur that matched my fathers.
I felt the bones and ligaments begin to stretch, and for a brief second my skin itched as fur sprouted.
When my legs and arms began to change I was forced over, on to all fours.
From there everything happened very quickly.
Suddenly I was a wolf again. This time, without all the pain.
I took a second to adjust to my new form, before taking off toward Clay. Then I realized I could smell him. The path he followed.I could track him.
I put my nose to the ground, and began following his scent. I grew confused when it began to lead me in circles. I let out a short, worried yip.
Then a small breeze blew Clays scent to me. From behind.
I spun just in time to see a black wolf bearing down on me.
Clay crashed into me, knocking me to the ground and pinning me.
I growled to let Clay know I didn't think this was funny, and wiggled to get free.
-Not gonna happen.- Clay said smugly.
I needed a distraction.
I sent a thought and let my eyes grow wide.
-Look out Clay!-
When he heard the panic in my voice he spun looking for the threat. I jumped up, nipping his ear.
-Not funny.- Clay said.
-I thought it was. Hey aren't we going to hunt?- I asked.
Clay turned serious.
-Ok, close your eyes and use your nose. What can you smell?-
I did as he told me, and sorted out the scents that assaulted my nose.
Flowers, tons of them, gave off a floral aroma, making me sneeze.
I smelled gasoline, coming from the direction of the house. I assumed it was from the van.
I sniffed again and smelled a squirrel.
Fun to chase, but not very big.
-I don't smell anything good.- I told Clay.
-Try again.- Clay urged.
If I were human I would have rolled my eyes. But I decided to humor him.
I inhaled deeply, and caught a faint whiff of something....musky. I struggled to identify the scent.
Then I recognized it.
-Deer!!- I yelled to Clay.
-Let's go, stick to the trees.-
So we took off, Clay letting me lead. I followed the scent trail, and we came to a small clearing. It was free from trees, and there was a doe and a young fawn. Then I noticed what was behind them.
-The buck- I sent to Clay.
He silently agreed, silently slipping around to come up behind them.
I was glad we found a buck. I didn't want to kill a mother or baby.
When Clay said he was ready, I lunged from my hiding place, scaring the buck. He bolted strait into Clay.
From then on everything was instinct. Wolf instinct. Before I could ask myself, 'What am I supposed to do?!' My body was already in motion.
Clay bit down on a leg, bring he animal to the ground. I jumped in and went for the killing bite.
I bite down hard on its jugular, avoiding the dangerous antlers, and tasted the coppery tang of blood.
If I had been human I would have been disgusted, revolted. But I was a wolf, and the deer appealed to that side of me.
I held onto its throat until the buck stopped moving.
-10 pointer, nice Kate." Clay said, giving me a wolfish grin.
Figures he would be a guy right now.
Clay and I tore into the deer, eating until we were full.
We walked back slowly, enjoying the nice day.
When we reached the spot where Clay had shifted, I saw his clothes folded near the base off a tree.
I had an idea.
Before Clay could say anything, I grabbed his clothes in my jaws and took off.
I heard Clay bark, and he gave chase.
I swerved back and forth, dodging the towering trees, and trying to elude Clay.
I ran back to the cabin startling Sarah who was sitting on the porch.
I ran up to her, dropping the clothes on her lap.
"Kate?" she asked, looking at me with awe.
I gave a bark of agreement, and heard Clay come running up from behind me. He tackled me to the ground and we rolled away from Sarah.
I finally pinned Clay and told him smugly,
-I win.-
Clay stretched up and licked my muzzle.
-Cheater.-
I could see Sarah watching with amusement from the corner of my eyes.
"You two better get ready for lunch." Sarah tossed Clays clothes to him and went inside.
-I'll see you soon.- I told Clay, and took off into the woods, following my scent trail back to my clothes.
I change quickly, as it was getting easier each time, and headed back to the house.
Clay met me on the way there, smiling.
"Hey Clay." I said, waving.
We headed inside for lunch, both of us with huge grins on our faces.
