Chapter 18

The day went by surprisingly fast. Though I was nervous. The whole time. Every noise, every shout, made me jump. I didn't see Nathan at all, and I wondered if he had actually left, or gotten kicked out.

I hoped so, that would make my day. Well so would getting out of this hell hole.

Simon finally showed up sometime in the late afternoon. It was earlier than I would have liked, but beggars can't be choosers.

My door clicked open, and Simon motioned me out. I walked out, trying to stay calm. But the adrenaline was making it hard to stay still.

Before Simon had a chance to react, I grabbed the collar of his white shirt, pulling him into my cell. I made sure to keep the door open.

"Kate! What are you-" His sentence was cut off by the thumping sound of my fist hitting his head.

Poor Simon. He always was to trusting.

He crumpled to the ground, and I searched his pockets until I found his key card.

I checked with my hearing, making sure the hallway was clear. When I was sure Simon hadn't brought company, I darted over to Emily's cell.

She was glued to the wall, watching my every move.

I swiped Simons card, typing in the code. After entering 1-2-3-4, the door popped open.

Thank the higher powers above.

Emily came out of her cell, and I handed her the card.

"Let's move."

I Changed quickly, my clothes shredding and fluttering around me.

We started off at a brisk jog, me leading the way. Other prisoners watched is from their cells. Some appeared to be cheering, while others pounded on the wall, wanting out.

I focused on our mission.

We came to a check point, where one guard was stationed.

Before he even had time to think about pulling the gun strapped to his chest, I had him pinned to the ground.

Emily used her telekinesis and hit him over the head with his own gun. He was unconscious instantly.

Emily scanned the card, and entered the code. My ears picked up the distant sound of footsteps. I barked to signal to Emily, and we were off again.

We didn't even have to pass the next checkpoint, we came upon the stairs before then. Emily pushed open the door and we were flying down the stairs.

I didn't want to worry her, but the footsteps were getting closer. They were following us down the stairs, and I could now make out at least four pairs.

We made it to the bottom floor, and Emily pushed open the next door.

I heard shouts of "Stop!" and "Don't!" but we continue on. They had fed us too well. Our bodies were in good physical condition. We went right when we left the stairs, and came to the next checkpoint.

There was no one there.

As Emily was sliding the card, I saw it.

The red glowing sign that said,

Emergency Exit.

Could it really be that simple? I barked to Emily, getting her attention. She saw what I was looking at and pushed open the door.

We burst into the sunlight. It hurt my eyes for a moment, and I had to blink. Then I saw out safe haven.

Woods, this place was surrounded by woods.

I sent another mental prayer out, and the door behind us flew open, we leaped into the trees. I pushed Emily faster, nudging her heels and giving encouraging barks. But I knew we weren't going to make it. We were going to slow.

I heard a familiar whizzing sound, and jumped up, putting my paws on her back, and pushing Emily down to the ground.

We scrambled up, and Emily took off. But I couldn't. My legs collapsed beneath me, and wouldn't respond. I knew what it meant, there was a dart in my shoulder.

When Emily notice I was still on the ground, she came running back. She tried to lift me and I knew it was useless. A ninety pound girl could not lift fifty-something pound wolf. I barked, trying to tell her to go on.

She wouldn't leave though, and the footsteps were in the woods now. When she tried to lift me again, I growled and snapped at her fingers.

The sad look in her blue eyes told me she got the message. She got up and took off into the trees, just as men rushed into our clearing.

I heard a voice yell, "I'll get help!" and I knew it was Emily.

The men surrounded me, trying to get close enough to lift me, but I snapped and growled at them.

Then I heard a deep voice.

"Go after the Witch." It was Nathan.

The dart in my shoulder was working faster than the others, maybe because it was left there. I couldn't pull it out like I had before.

Whatever the case, I was fading fast.

But before I slipped away, I heard Nathan say,

"You failed."
