After the dinner, the three of them parted ways at the corner, Taesan waving lazily before heading down his street. That left only Jungwon and Sunoo walking side by side, the cool night air brushing against them. Their footsteps echoed quietly, filling the gaps in their soft conversation.
As they neared Sunoo’s house, Jungwon slowed his pace just a little, as if not wanting the walk to end too soon. When they finally stopped at the front gate, he glanced at Sunoo, his expression casual but his voice carrying something warmer.
“Hey,” Jungwon said, rubbing the back of his neck, “if you're free after class tomorrow, why don’t you come watch my practice? You haven’t been to one before, right?”
Sunoo blinked, caught off guard. “Huh? Practice?”
“Yeah,” Jungwon nodded, smiling faintly. “It’s not anything special, but… it’d be nice if you came. Makes me play better, somehow.”
The words hung in the air longer than they should have, and Sunoo’s chest tightened. *Makes him play better? What does that even mean?*
Trying not to sound too eager, he shrugged lightly. “I’ll… think about it.”
Jungwon grinned, clearly satisfied with even that vague answer. “Alright. See you tomorrow, then. Hope you will come.”
Sunoo gave a small wave before slipping inside. The gate closed behind him, but his heart refused to settle. Taesan’s voice echoed again in his mind: *You’ll see it in the way he treats you.*
Now, with Jungwon’s request lingering in his ears, Sunoo wasn’t sure if he had just witnessed another piece of proof—or if it was simply the kind of thing Jungwon would say to any friend.
The doubt followed him inside like a shadow.

The next afternoon, the sun hung low over the field, casting long shadows across the green. The faint sound of whistles and shouts echoed in the air as Sunoo stood near the fence, fingers curled loosely around the metal rail. He had told himself he was just passing by—that he only wanted to see what practice looked like—but he knew that wasn’t true.
Jungwon was already on the field, his hair slightly damp with sweat, a focused expression on his face as he directed his teammates.
Every movement seemed sharp and sure, and Sunoo couldn’t help but feel a flicker of admiration watching him like that—confident, composed, and somehow different from the boy he had known since childhood.
When Jungwon finally noticed him, his eyes brightened almost immediately. He jogged over during a short break, grabbing a towel from the bench as he approached.
“You came,” Jungwon said, his smile breaking easily across his face. There was a hint of surprise there, but also something that looked suspiciously like pride.
“Yeah,” Sunoo replied, trying to sound casual as he tucked his hands into his pockets. “Didn’t have anything better to do.”
Jungwon laughed lightly. “Sure. You don’t have to pretend.”
Sunoo rolled his eyes, but his lips curved just slightly. “Just go back to your practice before your coach yells at you.”
