Matt's POV

Nick sat on the floor with his toy truck, frowning slightly. Skylar knelt beside him, her hand gently on his shoulder.

Skylar: "Nick... do you want to say it again? Mommy?"

Nick: hesitant "O... okay... otay?"

Matt: smiling softly, crouching down beside him "That's good, buddy. You're trying, and that's what matters."

Nick: looking up at me, unsure "Otay?"

Matt: "Yes... Otay. You'll get it perfectly soon. Skylar's your mommy now, and she loves you so much."

Skylar: softly "That's right, Nick. You're doing so well. Mommy's proud of you."

Nick: nodding slowly, then mumbling "Otay... Mommy."

Matt: grinning "There it is! That's my boy."

Skylar: hugging him gently "See? You did it! I love you, Nick."

Nick: hugging her back tightly "I love you... otay?"

Matt chuckled quietly, feeling a mix of pride and bittersweet sadness. Nick was learning, growing... and adjusting to life with Skylar as his mommy. But part of me couldn't help thinking of Ava, our first baby, and the family we'd once shared. Ava was always a sweet mommy to him and it's his first baby boy his dad left him and when I met her, she told me about him, his story and how shy nick was with me when he met me. Then around Christmas time he would always come to me for cookies when he started walking and we always hid that to Ava. She never find out about that. -chuckles-

Ava's POV (Video Call)

Later that evening, I set up a video call from my home. Aura Rae and Matthew Miles were asleep, and I allowed myself a moment to see Nick again — my first baby, my heart in miniature.

Ava: -voice trembling- "Nick... hi, sweetheart."

Nick: -looking at the screen, shyly- waving "Hi... Mama?"

Ava: -tears prickling- "Yes, baby... it's Mama."

Kat appeared in the background, waving cheerfully.

Kat: "Hi, Mama!"

Ava: smiling through tears "Hi, my baby girl! Oh, I missed you both so much."

Skylar: smiling softly, holding Nick "He's been practicing... he said 'otay' for me today."

Nick: hesitant but proud "Otay... Mommy."

Ava: tears falling freely, voice soft "He said it... he said it, Skylar. My baby... my Nick."

Matt: standing quietly beside Skylar, watching "He's learning. Slowly, but he's getting there."

Ava: sniffling, brushing a hand across her cheek "I know... I'm just... happy to see him. My little boy... and my little girl Kat too. All my babies, all together even if we're apart."

Skylar: nodding gently "We're making it work. Slowly, Nick's learning... and he's starting to feel safe."

Ava: smiling through tears "Thank you... for loving him, Skylar. That means everything to me."

Matt: softly, almost to himself "We all love him, Ava. We'll always make sure he's okay."

Nick: looking at the screen, a shy smile spreading "Mama... otay?"

Ava: laughing softly through tears "Yes, baby... it's okay. Mama loves you."

The video call ended with small waves and quiet smiles. I sat back, holding Aura Rae and Matthew Miles close, feeling a mix of longing and gratitude. Even though our families were apart, the love for our children remained unbroken — bridging the distance with every word, every "otay," and every tender smile.
