Kat's POV
The smell of disinfectant and coffee filled the small visitors' room. My heart pounded as I sat there, hands clasped in my lap, waiting. I'd been counting the days since I last saw him — Trevor. My husband. The man I loved even when it hurt.
The door opened quietly, and there he was — thinner, paler, but those same blue eyes met mine, full of regret and something softer... something like love.
Trevor: -hesitant smile- "Hey... Kat."
Kat: -standing quickly, eyes glistening- "Hey..."
Trevor: -nervous chuckle- "Didn't think I'd ever get to see you this soon."
Kat: -biting her lip- "I wasn't sure if I could... but I needed to."
Trevor: -sitting across from her, folding his hands- "You look good. Different... stronger."
Kat: -smiling faintly- "I had to be. You weren't there."
Trevor: -winces softly, nodding- "I know. I'm sorry, Kat. I messed up again. I wanted to be better for you... and for Alex, my dad, Ava my stepmom."
Kat: -tears spilling over- "You always say that, Trev. But this time... I really hope you mean it."
Trevor: -reaching out slowly, stopping halfway- "I do. I hit rock bottom, Kat. And the only thing that pulled me through was knowing you still believed in me... even if you shouldn't have."
Kat: -taking his hand, trembling slightly- "I never stopped believing in you. I just stopped believing you'd come back."
Trevor: -voice breaking- "I'm coming back this time. I promise. No more lies. No more bottles."
Kat: -squeezing his hand- "You have to keep that promise — not just for me, but for yourself. For your dad. For Cody. For everyone who still loves you."
Trevor: -nodding, tears in his eyes- "I know. I'm trying every day."
Kat: -smiling through tears- "And I'm proud of you for that. I really am."
Trevor: -whispering- "Do you still love me?"
Kat: -looking down, then meeting his gaze again- "I never stopped. But love has to heal, Trevor. It can't just hurt."
Trevor: -smiling faintly, voice soft- "Then maybe we start over. One day at a time."
Kat: -nodding- "One day at a time."
The clock ticked quietly above them. For the first time in a long while, it didn't feel like goodbye — it felt like hope.
Later That Night – Matt & Skylar's Home
Kat returned home, the night air cool against her face. Skylar met her at the door, arms open.
Skylar: -softly- "How'd it go?"
Kat: -smiling through fresh tears- "Better than I thought. He's trying, Mom. He really is."
Skylar: -hugging her- "That's all that matters right now, sweetheart."
Nick: -sleepy voice from the hallway- "Sissy Kat... otay?"
Kat: -kneeling, hugging him tight- "Yes, Nick. Everything's otay."
Matt: -standing nearby, smiling softly- "Proud of you, Kat. Took a lot of strength to do what you did."
Kat: -looking up at him- "Thanks, Dad. I just want us all to be happy again."
Matt: -placing a hand on her shoulder- "We're getting there, one step at a time."
