Kat's POV
The house glowed with soft orange light from the porch lanterns. Pumpkins lined the steps, and the smell of roasted apples and cinnamon drifted through the open windows. Tonight wasn't just Trevor's first night home—it was Matt's birthday.
Kat moved between the tables, setting out plates while laughter filled the living room.
Nick chased a balloon, Skylar helped Ava with the twins' bottles, and Cody carried trays from the kitchen still in his uniform shirt. Trevor stood by the window, smiling quietly, taking it all in.
Kat: "You'd never know this house ever saw tears."
Trevor: smiling "That's the best kind of miracle."
Skylar's POV
Skylar leaned against the counter, watching Matt unwrap a small box from Cody. Inside lay an engraved watch.
Cody: "Happy birthday, sir. Thought the Commander might like to keep time again."
Matt: grinning "Thanks, Captain Commander. Guess I can't be late anymore."
Skylar brushed a bit of icing on his nose.
Skylar: "Make a wish before we light the whole place on fire with candles just like John used to do it."
Matt: teasing "Too late—Nick already tried that with the matches."
Nick: giggling "Otay!"
Everyone laughed. Even Trevor's deep chuckle joined in, echoing warmly through the room.
Ava's POV
Ava sat quietly for a moment near the edge of the crowd, watching Matt blow out the candles. The flicker of light played over his face, and for a second she saw the boy he'd been—the one who used to sneak her pieces of cake after everyone else had gone to bed. Her throat tightened.
Alex: noticing, softly "You okay?"
Ava: nodding, smiling through tears "Just remembering... birthdays used to be different back then."
Alex: gently taking her hand "And look where we are now. Still celebrating—just with more hearts around the table."
Ava wiped her eyes, laughing quietly.
Ava: "You always know what to say."
Alex: "Doctor's orders."
Across the room, Matt caught her eye and gave a small, knowing smile. There was no pain in it—just peace, like both of them had finally laid the past to rest.
Trevor: Raising his glass, voice steady.
Trevor: "To second chances, and to this family—for teaching me what coming home really means."
Everyone lifted their glasses.
All: "To family!"
The cheer rolled through the house as the twins gurgled, Nick clapped his hands shouting, "Otay! Otay!" and the night filled with laughter again.
Outside, October's cool breeze rustled the trees, carrying the sound of music and love out into the dark—proof that even the most broken hearts can find warmth again.
