Alex's POV
The hospital was quiet, but my mind was anything but. Every step down the hallway felt heavier than the last. I knew Ava was awake, I knew Matt had been with her, and I knew the truth that neither of us could fully voice yet: I loved her.
I stopped outside her room, leaning against the wall. Through the glass, I saw her. Sitting up slightly, her eyes soft but searching, as if she could sense me even from a distance. My chest ached.
I took a deep breath and stepped inside. "Hey," I said softly, careful not to startle her.
She turned her head, and her eyes widened slightly when they met mine. "Alex..." Her voice was fragile, but there was relief in it too.
"I wasn't sure you'd remember me," I said, moving closer but keeping a respectful distance. "But... you're awake. That's what matters."
"I do remember," she whispered, a small smile tugging at her lips. "I remember everything... the nights you stayed with me, talking, telling me stories. You never left."
I nodded, swallowing hard. "I promised I'd be here when you woke up. I meant it. And I still do." My hands were trembling slightly, and I forced them to my sides. "Ava... I—"
She reached out, touching my arm gently. "Alex... I've been thinking about you. About everything." Her voice cracked slightly. "You were there when I needed someone the most. I can't forget that. I... care about you."
I felt my heart jump, but a shadow crossed her face. "But..." she continued, her eyes flicking toward the doorway where Matt had been earlier. "Matt... he's back with Skylar. I... I care about him too."
The words hit me, but I forced myself to stay calm. "Ava, you don't have to explain. I know it's complicated. He's my brother... and I care about him too. But what I feel for you... it's different. It's not about being first, or about promises. It's about being here, with you, now."
Tears welled in her eyes. "I don't want to hurt either of you."
"You won't," I said softly, taking a cautious step closer. "Loving me doesn't mean you stop loving Matt. Loving me just means... you let yourself feel something real. Something that's yours."
She swallowed hard, looking down at her hands, then back at me. "I don't even know where to start. My heart... it's all tangled up."
I reached out gently, placing my hand over hers. "Then start here," I said. "With me. Let's figure it out... together. No one's asking you to choose yet. Just... let me be the one who stays. The one who's here for you, always."
Her lips trembled, and for a long moment, we just looked at each other. The machines hummed softly, the world outside paused, and all that mattered was the quiet weight of truth we were finally sharing.
Finally, she whispered, almost to herself, "I don't want to lose you, Alex."
"You won't," I promised, my voice firm but gentle. "I'm not going anywhere."
And for the first time in weeks, I felt a flicker of hope. A chance to rebuild what we'd lost... together.
