Kat's POV
The sound of tires on the gravel drive made Kat freeze. She dropped the dish towel and hurried to the front window, her breath catching when she saw the familiar black SUV pull up. Her heart raced as the door opened and Trevor stepped out — looking healthier, cleaner, and more like himself than she'd seen in years.
For a moment, she couldn't move.
Skylar whispered from behind her, voice trembling with emotion.
Skylar: "He's here, Kat."
Nick stood by the window, clutching his "Welcome Home Trebor" drawing, bouncing on his toes.
Nick: -grinning proudly- "Trebor home! Otay!"
Matt chuckled softly, resting a hand on Nick's shoulder.
Matt: "Yeah, buddy. He's really home."
Then Cody stepped forward, straight-backed, dressed in his Marine uniform, medals shining under the afternoon light. His eyes glimmered with pride — and something deeper, something like forgiveness.
Trevor stepped closer, shoulders squaring, emotion flickering behind his eyes as he recognized his brother-in-law standing tall before him.
Cody: firm but soft "Commander."
Trevor smiled faintly, nodding once — an unspoken bond between soldiers and family.
Trevor: "Captain."
Cody extended his hand — and then, instead of shaking, pulled his brother-in-law into a hug.
Cody: voice breaking "Welcome home, bro. We've missed you."
Trevor: holding him tightly "Missed you too, bruh. More than you'll ever know."
When they finally pulled apart, Cody turned to the car and lifted a folded uniform jacket from the passenger seat — Trevor's own. He handed it over with both hands.
Cody: smiling proudly "Thought you might want this back, Commander."
Trevor took it carefully, his fingers brushing over the insignia, eyes glistening.
Trevor: quietly "Feels like I'm earning it again."
Cody: "You already have."
Kat: Tears streamed down her cheeks as she finally stepped forward.
Kat: whispering "Welcome home, Trevor."
Trevor dropped the uniform, crossing the space between them and pulling her into his arms.
Trevor: softly "I'm sorry for every moment I wasn't the man you needed me to be."
Kat: through tears "You are now. That's all that matters."
Nick ran up then, his little hands tugging on Trevor's pant leg, holding up his crayon drawing proudly.
Nick: "Look, Trebor! For you!"
Trevor knelt down, smiling through tears.
Trevor: laughing softly "For me, huh?
This is the best welcome home gift I could ever ask for."
He scooped Nick up, hugging him tight while the others stood around — Skylar with a soft smile, Matt with quiet pride, and Cody resting a hand on his brother's shoulder.
For the first time in a long time, the Smith family stood together — not perfect, but whole.
Ava's POV
Later that night, Ava and Alex sat on the porch, the twins sleeping soundly inside. The news of Trevor's return had reached them by a short video from Kat — all smiles, all tears.
Ava: smiling softly "They look so happy. It's like a piece of the family finally came back."
Alex: wrapping an arm around her "Everyone's finally finding their place again."
Ava: quietly "Maybe we all needed to break a little... to find out how strong love really is."
Alex smiled, pressing a kiss deeply.
Alex: "Love's not about never falling apart. It's about coming home — just like he did."
The crickets sang in the distance as the world seemed to breathe again — one family, mending piece by piece, under the same soft sky.
