I stood in front of the mirror far too long, turning a crimson lipstick between my fingers, like the wrong choice might tip something I couldn't see yet.
My green eyes looked tired. Not just because of the dark circles under them- which I'd unsuccessfully tried to cover with concealer. They looked older, somehow. Like they'd stared into a void and the void had looked back.
They looked haunted.
I shook the thoughts from my head, carefully applying the lipstick. There was no special occasion for it, but living with the Malfoys had taught me that good form meant everything. No matter how you were feeling, you had to look like you had it together.
A sharp rapping at my window diverted my attention. I crossed the room and opened the window to let a barn owl in, and it landed gracefully on top of my armchair, an envelope tied to its leg.
I untied the letter, recognising the distinctive handwriting on the front. The owl flew off, and I opened the letter from Draco, already knowing it was going to be short, like the last 6 letters he'd sent;
Erin,
I got your letter. I'm glad to hear you're well and that everything at home is settled. Things here are fine... busy, but manageable.
I don't have much to say yet, but I wanted you to know I'm thinking of you. Please take care of yourself.
Draco
I read it and then reread it another three times. It told me nothing. Just like the rest of his letters the past month and a half.
I was more worried than irritated. I would have expected a couple of jokes, some complaining about Potter, like when we were at school together. But there was none of that now. What was happening at Hogwarts that he couldn't tell me... or wouldn't?
I'd also noticed he never mentioned my old friends. True, he didn't run in the exact same circle I did at school, but he was on friendly terms with them all. If anything, it made me feel more cut off and distant from them all. Like it was a past life I'd dreamt of.
The letter joined the rest in my dresser drawer. I took one last look in my mirror, before heading downstairs.
The drawing room was kept deliberately dim, as though the Manor itself preferred secrets to be spoken in shadow. Firelight crackled low in the hearth, casting slow, amber flickers across the high ceiling and the pale stone walls, never quite reaching the corners of the room. A handful of wrought-iron sconces burned along the walls, their flames steady and subdued, illuminating polished wood, dark velvet upholstery, and the glint of crystal glasses resting on side tables.
Lucius occupied his usual chair near the fire, composed and immaculate, a drink held loosely in one gloved hand. Narcissa sat opposite him, legs crossed with careful elegance, her posture perfect even in repose. Bellatrix lounged rather than sat, draped across the arm of a chaise like she belonged to no rules but her own, a goblet balanced carelessly between her fingers.
Others were scattered through the room; Rodolphus Lestrange, silent and watchful in the shadows, and Yaxley, leaning back with a glass of firewhisky, his voice low and deliberate when he spoke. Their conversation never rose above a murmur, words chosen with precision, pauses lingering just long enough to suggest that not everything being discussed was meant to be said aloud.
The air smelled faintly of smoke, old magic, and something sharper beneath it... tension, held in check.
I lingered near the edge of the room at first, pretending to examine the spines of old books I'd already read, letting the conversation wash over me in fragments.
