Erin's POV

'Right, you haven't forgotten anything have you, sweetheart?' Mum asked anxiously.

'Mum. Stop worrying, seriously. I've got everything I need. My wand, quills, books, telescope, brass scales-'

'Is Shadow still in her cage?' She interrupted sternly.

I sighed. 'Yes mum.' But I checked to see if my jet black cat, Shadow was still in her cage. Just in case. She was sleeping softly.

'Seriously, don't worry mum, it'll be great.' I reassured her.

'How can I not worry, you're not exactly the typical student, are you?'

'Mum, ssh!' I hissed, afraid people would hear.

She ignored me. 'But it doesn't matter. You're still my daughter, and you'll make a great witch, no matter who your father is.'

'Mum-' I warned.

'The train's going to leave soon, go! I'll write to you as soon as possible!' She said hurriedly, realising that I had to go.

I got my trunk and Shadow's cage and headed to the nearest carriage doors.

I got shadow on first, and then proceeded to get my heavy trunk onto the train.

'Need some help?'

I looked up to see two identical red-headed boys, maybe a year or two older than me, standing just next to Shadow's cage.

'Yes please.' I accepted their offer, and they jumped off the train, grabbed my trunk on both sides and carried it onto the train for me.

'Thanks.' I said, following them on.

'No problem. I'm Fred. And he's George.' Fred said, pointing to his brother, I was guessing from their similar features.

'Nice to meet you. I'm Erin.' I said.

'Nice to meet you too Erin. Anyway, we have to go. See you later.' George said, and they left me to it.

I grabbed my trunk and Shadow's cage, and headed down the carriages to find an empty compartment.

I eventually found one quite far down the train, and put my trunk under my seat and Shadow beside me.

Shadow was my best friend. Mum had bought her for me when I was accepted into Hogwarts and throughout the summer, we developed a close bond as pet and owner.

'Anything from the trolley, dear?'

I looked up. The trolley lady had stopped outside my compartment.

'Erm... I'll just have a couple pumpkin pasties please.' I said, giving her the money for them. She handed me my food and then continued down the train.

I'd skipped breakfast in a state of nerves, so I was quite hungry now.

It was beginning to get dark. We must be nearly at Hogwarts.

With this thought in mind, I changed into my robes and tied my long, auburn hair back into a messy bun. I checked my pale reflection in the mirror; I wished I'd put on some makeup. But I didn't have time this morning; I was in such a rush.

No time to regret that now.

Soon, the train stopped, and we all left the train. This time I was able to get my luggage off the train without any help. I was so excited. Which house would I be sorted into? Probably Slytherin, judging from my family background. What would the common room look like? Who would I make friends with? What were the teachers like? Was I going to be the only one in my year to be different because I held a fake name?

I scowled to myself. Way to ruin my mood. By thinking about that

'Firs' years! Firs' years, over here!' A giant man was beckoning towards us.

From my parents description, this must be Hagrid, gamekeeper of Hogwarts.

'Firs' years with me!' He said again. We all followed him to where there were boats moored at a huge lake.

'Hey, do you want to take a boat with me?' A boy who was slightly taller than me, asked.

'Erm, sure.' I nodded.

'I'm Lee Jordan.' He said.

'Erin T- Brooks.' I quickly corrected myself from saying Travers. This boy  might be in the same year as me, and none the wiser, but I wasn't going to risk it.

'Nice to meet you Erin.' He smiled, luckily not noticing my slight slip-up. 'C'mon then!'

So we left our luggage where Hagrid instructed and told us it would be taken up to the school separately, and got into the boat.

The journey to the school didn't take too long, probably because Lee was a big talker. I barely needed to respond as he kept up most of the conversation.

We were shown in by someone called Professor McGonagall and we all filed into the Great Hall, to have to do the sorting process.

Since my surname was B, it didn't take very long for Professor McGonagall to get to my name.

'Brooks, Erin!' She called.

'Good luck.' Lee whispered from behind me, as I stumbled out of line and went over to where the sorting hat was.

Professor McGonagall put it on my head as I sat down.

'Slytherin!' The hat shouted, almost as soon as it touched my head.

I wasn't surprised, but felt myself going red as I made my way to the Slytherin table.

I recognised Fred and George on the Gryffindor table raising their eyebrows as I passed. A lot of Gryffindors glared as I passed, and generally at the Slytherin table. Clearly the Gryffindors and Slytherins didn't like each other.

That was sad. But I guessed it was the norm here. I mean, I was a pure-blood. I was raised to believe that muggle borns weren't supposed to come here and didn't deserve to be in our world. And from what I'd heard, a lot of Gryffindors were "mudbloods" as my dad referred to them as.

It was probably a good thing that I wasn't in Gryffindor then.

God, I was prejudiced.

When it was Lee's turn, he was sorted into Gryffindor.

I grimaced. Well I thought I could get to know him, and maybe become good friends with him.

Maybe not.

I saw Fred and George hi-five Lee as he sat down with them.

Looks like my first day was off to a great start.

Note the heavy sarcasm.

What if I was going to be friendless? What if nobody would want to be my friend because I was a Slytherin?

No. Don't be stupid, Erin. You'll make friends in your own house. Maybe in the other 2 houses too.

Tomorrow is another day, I thought as I watched the last few students being sorted.
