Chapter 2: Wrong Place, Wrong Time

It had only been 12 hours since the three had settled in and Damian already had a creeping suspicion that this normal life was a lie. His friends always exaggerated it but his current living situation was the farthest from normal he'd experienced in a long time.

It was evening and he sat at his bedroom table, textbooks spread neatly, wearing his reading glasses and his hair slightly ruffled. It was his first day at school after moving here and he got to walk with Anya to and from school (he hadn't told her where he moved for the week yet, just that he'd moved for a week). Somehow Anya still managed to get to class late, even though he was beside her the whole time and came to class in time. Now he just sat at his desk calculating how early they'd have to leave if both he and Anya wanted to get to school in time. Calm, responsible... normal. Perfectly ordinary.

Ding-Dong!

It was only the first day after they'd moved in and Damian was already reconsidering his life choices.

Ding-Dong!

The doorbell rang again.

And this time, Damian couldn't just ignore it. Both Yuri and Fiona were at "work" so Damian was alone in the apartment, with no pre-made alibis. He peeked through the peephole and saw a teenage girl, about his age, with shoulder length light brown hair, and light blue eyes. She was wearing a hoodie which had a simple white flower on it and was leaning against the wall, waiting.

Nope. Not today. Not ever.

He opened the door cautiously.

"Hi!" she chirped, cheerfully, "My name's Poppy! I saw you moving in yesterday! Welcome to the block!"

Calm down, Damian. You're a Desmond. But you can't be a Desmond right now. You have to be a normal boy. Act normal. Be normal. Don't attract attention..

"Yes. Thank you. I... appreciate the welcome." he replied, smiling politely.

Poppy tilted her head. "You're... cute. And responsible. I mean, you carried all your boxes yourself yesterday!"

Damian swallowed. "Yes... responsible. Strong. Capable. Definitely... normal."

Internal panic level: critical.

Poppy smiled brighter. "Wow! That's really impressive. You even helped the movers when one of the boxes almost fell! You're... so sweet."

Damian blinked. Sweet?! No, I'm meant to be normal!

"I... uh... just did what anyone would do," he said, hoping the casual shrug would make him invisible.

Poppy grinned. "I don't know... you make it sound so effortless."

Damian's heart rate spiked. It was obvious to him that every attempt to sound normal somehow made him more attractive to this girl. He wanted to dig a hole in the ground and die.

"Uh... thank you," he muttered, waving vaguely. "I'm... very glad you noticed."

"Are your parents here? Or... family?" Poppy asked innocently, peeking past him into the apartment.

Damian's mind raced. He didn't have Yuri or Fiona's numbers yet. He had no idea what he could say. Think. Think. Think.

"My... parents?" Damian stammered. "Uh... they moved to... Paris. Then they got divorced and my mum is now in Hawaii while my Dad is in the hospital because he fell down a ski slope. Yeah, they like travelling. I'm actually living with my relatives right now."

She nodded solemnly. "I'm so sorry. That must be heartbreaking!

"No... they were never really there for me..." Great Damian, just great! Apparently saying that your parents abandoned you DOESN'T make her go away.

Poppy tilted her head again. "You're... really nice. I think we should hang out sometime. Maybe you can show me the ropes around here?"

Damian froze mid-wave. "Uh... yes! Absolutely. Totally! But... maybe not now. Very busy..."

"Okay! Well... see you around!" And with a cheerful wave, she skipped down the corridor.

Damian sagged onto the sofa, trembling. I can't believe that... worked... and failed... at the same time. Just my luck...

Yuri and Fiona arrived an hour later and found Damian still seated on the sofa.

"A neighbour came." Damian said, rapidly.

"What did you say?" Yuri asked, mentally taking note.

"I told her my parents are taking a trip around the world and that you both are my relatives." Damian said, confident but still slightly confused.

"A trip?" Yuri asked his eyebrows raised.

"She didn't say much about it." Damian said, shrugging it off.

Fiona, arms crossed, didn't even flinch. "We need to exchange numbers immediately. If another visitor comes, improvisation is not an option."

Damian groaned. "I didn't have your numbers yet! How was I supposed to coordinate?"

Yuri muttered, "Then we must be more careful next time. Calm. Coordinated."

"Technically what we're doing is illegal, so we must be careful." Fiona added.

"So from now on we are 'relatives' then." Damian stated, looking down at the floor, deep in thought.

Yuri nodded reluctantly. "Relatives... fine. Keep your imaginary family straight."

Fiona rolled her eyes. "And if that girl, Poppy, comes back, we coordinate answers. Agreed?"

Damian nodded. "Agreed." Totally fine. Absolutely normal. Nothing to panic over. I am not panicking.

"Also" Yuri added, "Be less attractive, Daniel." he said, a serious expression on his face.

"HOW DO I DO THAT?!" Damian said, genuinely trying.

"Ignore him, Daniel. We'll deal with the girl later." Fiona said, with a practised calm.
