Chapter 7: Betty knows Best?

Grandma Betty sat proudly on her armchair, wrapped in a shawl like a queen on her throne.

In front of her stood Yor, who seemed slightly worried, Loid, who was skeptical about all of this, Yuri, who had a dangerously calm gaze, Fiona, who seemed sharp as ever, Franky, who was just entertained by the whole thing and, finally -

Anya. And "Daniel".

Standing side by side like criminals in court.

Damian had never been more tense in his life.

Grandma Betty squinted at them.

"But, I thought she was Daniel."

"No Grandma Betty, I'm Anya." Anya replied, sweetly.

"I guess so. But yes, that's them." she said, gesturing to the pair in front of her.

Both Loid and Yuri stiffened. "Them?"

"The back stairs," Grandma Betty said firmly. "I saw them."

Anya's brain kicked into overdrive. Think. Think. THINK.

"No, Grandma Betty," Anya said, stepping forward. "You're talking about Alex."

Everyone blinked.

"...Alex?" Yor echoed.

"Yes!" Anya nodded enthusiastically. "Alex is a girl. Grandma Betty saw Alex."

"That makes sense," Franky said slowly. "Alex is a gender neutral name too."

Grandma Betty frowned.

"No I'm not."

The room froze.

Anya panicked—then reached into her pocket and produced a cookie.

"Cookie?" she offered.

Grandma Betty accepted it immediately.

While she chewed, Anya launched into action.

"Alex is my best friend's cousin's friend's neighbour's dog's roommate," Anya explained rapidly. "She has pink hair because she dyes it (she said she really liked my hair) and green eyes because she wears contacts and she borrowed Daniel's hoodie yesterday because she's cold all the time and she likes oversized clothes."

Damian nodded. "All true."

Grandma Betty swallowed.

"...Then why were you two sneaking around together?"

Anya didn't miss a beat.

"We were rehearsing."

"For what?" Loid asked.

"A play," Anya said. "A very serious one. With back stairs."

Franky snorted. "Classic theater."

Grandma Betty narrowed her eyes again.

"...Aren't you two married?"

Damian nearly passed out.

"WHAT—"

"No!" Anya said instantly. "You're thinking of the newlyweds on the block."

Everyone paused.

"The ones on the second floor," Anya continued confidently. "Grandma Betty was the first to find out they're having a girl."

Grandma Betty nodded. "I was."
