Years later..
The morning sun filtered through sheer linen curtains, casting a soft, honeyed glow across the bedroom floor. Jisoo stirred beneath her blanket, her face half-buried in the pillow, as if still clinging to the remnants of sleep. Then, it started again, the relentless, high-pitched chirp of her phone, vibrating against the nightstand like a tiny, frantic bird.
She groaned, rolling over and squinting at the screen.
Rosé calling... again.
And again.
And again.
She waited five seconds. The phone rang again.
With a dramatic sigh, she snatched the phone and pressed answer before it could go to voicemail for the fourth time.
"What. Is. It," Jisoo mumbled, voice thick with sleep. And then all she heard was her best friend scream. Jisoo flopped back onto the bed, pressing a pillow over her face. "For someone who sings like an angel," she mumbled, "you scream like a banshee before 9 a.m."
Cursing under her breath, voice thick with sleep. "Rosé. If this isn't life or death, I'm blocking you."
"Jisoo!" Rosé's voice was high-pitched, trembling with panic. "It's worse than life or death" Rosé's voice burst, breathless, like she'd been sprinting up six flights of stairs. "I need you. Now."
Jisoo blinked, slowly pushing herself upright. "Did someone die?"
"Worse," Rosé said gravely. "I have to meet Lisa's sister today. In ten hours. At her apartment. For dinner. And I don't know what to wear, Jisoo. I don't even know what kind of person she is. What if she hates me? What if she's one of those people who judges by appearance? What if she senses I over-prepare?"
Jisoo rubbed her temples. "That's not a real thing."
"It is when you're meeting the sister of the woman you've been in love with for a year and a half and you've never met her until now."
Jisoo paused, genuinely surprised. "You've never met Lisa's sister?"
"No! She moved to New Zealand before Lisa and I even started dating. I've seen one blurry photo of her holding a surfboard. That's it. She could be a retired astronaut turned organic farmer. I don't know."
"So why meet now?"
"Because she's back. Temporarily, at least. Visiting. And Lisa wants us to get along. And I want her to like me. So I need you. Please, Jisoo. Come over. Help me pick an outfit. Pick my brain. Tell me I'm not about to walk into a passive-aggressive interrogation."
Jisoo exhaled, long and slow. She really didn't want to. The weekend was supposed to be slow coffee on the balcony, rewatching old musicals, maybe finishing the novel she'd been meaning to read for months.
But Rosé sounded on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
And Jisoo, despite her reputation for being cool and collected, had never been able to say no to Rosé when she truly needed her.
"Fine," she said. "But I'm bringing my blanket. And complaining the whole time."
"Thank you! You're the best! I love you!" Rosé squealed before hanging up.
Jisoo stared at the phone, then tossed it aside, dragging herself out of bed to take a shower with all the enthusiasm of someone reporting to a job they hated. The warm spray washed away the last of her drowsiness, and by the time she stepped out, towel wrapped around her like a toga, she was already plotting how to calm her best friend down.
