- Jennie a rich girl who everyone admires. A smart, kind and beautiful girl everybody wanted. She didn't give a damn to all of her suitors, she got all her attention to her maid, all she ever wanted was her.
—
The grand, sprawling estate of the Kim family was a world of its own, cloaked in an aura of old money and timeless elegance. At its heart was Jennie, the only daughter, a dazzling creature admired by all. Her beauty was undeniable, a sharp intelligence shone in her eyes, and her kindness was spoken of in hushed, reverent tones. Suitors, a parade of eligible young men from equally prestigious families, vied for her attention, their bouquets overflowing, their invitations endless. But Jennie, in her exquisite designer clothes, her perfectly coiffed hair, and her serene smile, remained utterly indifferent.
Her attention, all of it, was reserved for one person: Jisoo.
Jisoo had been a fixture in Jennie's life since before memory truly solidified. Her mother was the head housekeeper, and Jisoo, growing up within the manor's walls, had become Jennie's shadow, her playmate, and eventually, her personal maid. They had scaled ancient oak trees together, whispered secrets under star-dusted skies, and navigated the labyrinthine corridors of childhood side-by-side. Their bond was deep, forged in shared laughter and quiet understanding, yet always, subtly, underscored by the invisible line that separated mistress from maid. Jisoo understood that line implicitly, always maintaining a respectful distance, her eyes ever watchful, her demeanor ever diligent.
For Jennie, however, that line had long since blurred, then vanished entirely.
It began subtly, an insidious warmth that blossomed within her chest. She remembered her father, a man of quiet wisdom, once explaining love to her when she was a budding teenager, curious about the romantic comedies she secretly watched. "It's when someone's happiness becomes more important than your own, Jennie," he'd said, "when their smile lights up your whole day, and just the thought of them makes your heart feel like it's taking flight. It's an undeniable pull, a magnetic force that draws you only to them."
Jennie had dismissed it then, attributing it to movie magic. But as she watched Jisoo, meticulously folding her clothes, or bringing her a cup of tea, a warmth would spread through her. Jisoo's easy laugh, a sound like wind chimes, would indeed light up her day. The way Jisoo's dark, intelligent eyes crinkled when she smiled, the gentle curve of her lips, it all started to feel like that 'undeniable pull'. Her heart, indeed, felt like it took flight sometimes, a nervous flutter she couldn't explain or control.
Jennie was not one for grand declarations or overt displays of affection. Her love for Jisoo was a silent, simmering thing, a constant undercurrent that flowed beneath her composed exterior. It manifested in small ways: a lingering gaze when Jisoo wasn't looking, a quiet insistence that Jisoo join her for tea on the terrace, a possessive edge to her voice when anyone else dared to ask Jisoo for a favor.
The full force of her feelings, however, hit her like a tidal wave during one of their typical weekend gatherings with her closest friends, Lisa and Rosé. The three of them had been inseparable since kindergarten, a riot of laughter and shared secrets. But Lisa, with her mischievous grin and playful nature, had a habit of flirting with everyone, and Jisoo, with her calm beauty and quick wit, was often a target.
"Jisoo-yah," Lisa purred, leaning back on the plush sofa, "you're looking exceptionally radiant today. Is it the new brand of polish you're using on the silverware, or just your natural glow?"
Jisoo, ever composed, chuckled softly. "Just good old elbow grease, Ms. Manoban. And perhaps the lack of sleep from polishing all your silver."
Rosé laughed, but Lisa winked, her eyes twinkling. "Oh, but your eyes shine even brighter than the silver, my dear. Perhaps we should sneak away from this boring meeting and go for a drive later? I know a great spot for stargazing."
