Wednesday was absolutely fucking with her.
Sage was a vampire. She didn’t sleep. She didn’t dream. She didn’t lie awake replaying the same moments until they carved grooves into her skull.
And yet.
She lay flat on her back, staring at the stone ceiling, unmoving while Enid snored softly from across the room. The sound was grounding in an irritating way. Sage’s hands rested over her stomach, fingers curling every time Wednesday’s voice echoed in her head.
Sleep. You’ll need it.
She scoffed quietly. Sleep for what? Processing the fact that her fated mate treated destiny like a mild inconvenience?
Normally, she’d roam the halls at night. Nevermore after dark belonged to her. The towers, the locked rooms, the forgotten staircases humming with old magic and rot. But tonight her thoughts were too sharp, too loud.
Around two in the morning, she sat up abruptly.
Enough.
She slid from her bed, pulling on a jacket and slipping out without a sound. The corridors were empty, moonlight pooling across the floor as she moved like a shadow. She pressed against a loose brick near the east wing. It shifted. A hidden door gave way, revealing a narrow spiral staircase winding upward.
The tower.
She climbed quickly, passing relics draped in dusty white sheets. Chairs, mirrors, things that remembered lives long gone. Sage ignored them, moving straight through until she pushed open the final hatch and stepped onto the rooftop.
Cold night air wrapped around her immediately, threading through her hair. She tipped her head back and looked up.
Stars.
She found the Big Dipper instinctively, then traced others with her eyes, fingers lifting as if she could touch them. The constellations flickered, ancient and indifferent, dancing across the dark sky.
For a while, she just breathed.
The sky lightened slowly, dawn bleeding in at the edges. Sage hissed when sunlight brushed her exposed skin, the faint shimmer giving her away. “Rude,” she muttered, rolling her eyes before vanishing from the rooftop in a blur.

The day moved strangely fast.
Classes blurred together, threaded by the constant awareness of Wednesday’s presence. He appeared beside her like a certainty. They didn’t announce anything. They didn’t need to.
His hand would find hers beneath desks, fingers lacing slowly, deliberately. Other times his palm rested high on her thigh, thumb pressing just enough to remind her he was there. Watching. Claiming.
To everyone else, Wednesday was unchanged.
To Sage, he was terrifyingly attentive.
He followed her between classes, always half a step behind or directly beside her. Protective without being obvious. Possessive without a word. It sent a constant, low hum through her veins.
They parted at the dorms to get ready for the festival. Wednesday left first, because that was the plan.
Enid did not care about the plan.
The second Sage stepped inside, the werewolf gasped like she’d been waiting her entire life for this moment. “Explain. Everything. Now.”
Clothes immediately assaulted Sage.
“Enid,” she warned.
“Nope,” Enid chirped. “You’re being dressed.”
Sage surrendered with a sigh. It reminded her painfully of Alice. Same energy. Same refusal to let her exist unfashionably. Enid shoved clothes at her with terrifying enthusiasm while Sage muttered a tired thank you.
