Sage sat on the school grounds, cross-legged in the grass, dressed in an old shirt with her hair pinned back Korean-style. An unused paintbrush rested beside her, streaks of black brushing against her glass-pale skin. Her hands were littered with smudged paint as she held her brush in her right hand, visibly relaxed. One green AirPod sat in her left ear, playing a mix of classical music while she painted the canoe inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, *The Black Cat*.
The other girls helped where they could, but it was mainly Sage’s task because of her love for art. Her eyes tracked every stroke she made on the once completely white canoe. She was working on the eyes now—striking green with softer pale shades at the sides that blended into white.
Enid barked orders at the others, trying to get the costumes finished first. She let the vampire take her time, knowing she would continue well into the night and dawn since she didn’t sleep. Enid eventually crouched down beside Sage, observing for a few milliseconds before launching into a rant about Ajax.
“Like, I don’t understand how someone can be that cute and so fucking dense. I’ve flirted, brushed against him, and NOTHING,” the wolf cried.
Sage merely hummed, focused on her painting.
“I swore this year would be my year, and the guy I like won’t fucking take a damn hint!” Enid whined.
Sage patted her head, letting the wolf talk her ear off while she continued painting.
The two sat like that for a good thirty minutes before a familiar dark, gothic presence appeared in front of them. The monotone boy stood with his hands neatly behind his back, his outfit punctual, his hair slicked back with a few stubborn strands falling over his eyes, making Wednesday look strikingly handsome.
“Decided to stay after all?” Enid joked as she stood up, brushing dirt from her school uniform, a bubbly smile on her face.
Wednesday replied with far too many elaborate words for the poor vampire to register, as she was focused on the violin solo playing in her AirPod. One thing she did hear was that Rowan was alive.
Was she going insane? She had watched him die.
The questions surrounded Sage like chains. Her head felt heavy, and then, as if a light switch had flipped, she was fine again. Enid was nowhere in sight, and Wednesday’s hand rested on her shoulder.
“Mia cara, you’re not going crazy. Not yet,” Wednesday said softly as he gently tugged her up and kissed the corner of her mouth.
The vampire sighed, relaxing into his touch and allowing him to guide her wherever he pleased.
“I have to go audition for meaningless clubs to satisfy Weems, and you, my love, are coming with me.”
Sage chuckled, pulling back and resting her hands on his chest. Wednesday welcomed the coolness of her touch with a soundless hum.
“I have to help paint the canoe. I can’t come with you,” she said with a soft laugh, watching his face shift into an annoyed expression.
“Mi regina, don’t be like that. I’ll pop into your dorm afterward, promise.”
Sage countered with a kiss on his cheek, but the gothic turned his head so her lips landed on his instead. His hand rose to cradle her neck, not to harm her, just to rest there as the vampire melted into his arms.
“That’s my girl. Now off to your unpaid labour,” Wednesday commented as he released her.
Sage nodded and walked off, lovestruck.
