The couple pulled apart when the thought of escaping slipped back into Wednesday’s mind. He kept one hand on Sage’s waist as he guided her toward the agreed-upon meeting spot. Enid had already sent them off, nearly in tears after clinging to Sage like she might never see her again.

They stopped at a dart stand, and Sage’s eyes locked onto a stuffed panda hanging from the top shelf. Of course Wednesday noticed. Three darts later, the panda was hers, tucked under her arm like treasure.

Then the barista boy appeared. Tyler.

He and Wednesday exchanged a few awkward words before Tyler got called away, flashing Sage a polite smile before disappearing back into the crowd.

Sage relaxed a little once he was gone. Something about him felt… complicated. She leaned closer into Wednesday, fingers curling in his sleeve.

After successfully losing Weems in the crowd, the couple slipped through the festival, trying to enjoy the moment while it lasted. They were just about to leave when Wednesday suddenly stopped.

His eyes glazed over.

A vision.

“Rowan,” he breathed.

Before Sage could ask, Wednesday took off running.

“Are you serious right now?” she muttered, sprinting after him, trying not to draw attention as they cut into the darker edges of the festival grounds. “You’re actually going to give me a heart attack.”

Then the mate bond hit.

Hard.

Sage froze as she saw Wednesday lifted into the air, his body locked tight, breath choking in his throat. Rowan stood in front of him, eyes blazing, hands raised, power vibrating through the space between them.

“hes's going to destroy Nevermore,” Rowan shouted, voice cracking. “My mother saw it!”

“Rowan, stop!” Sage yelled, panic tearing out of her chest. “Let him go!”

Rowan turned.

And lifted her too.

Wednesday’s eyes widened. “Rowan, don’t touch her,” he gasped. “Take me. Just me.”

The pressure around Sage’s throat tightened. Her vision blurred. Wednesday struggled against the invisible force, terror written all over his face as he tried to reach her.

The air snapped.

The woods erupted.

A massive shape burst from the trees, slamming into Rowan and dragging him away with a scream that cut straight through the night. Bone cracked. Blood hit the ground.

The pressure vanished.

Sage and Wednesday collapsed.

Wednesday caught her instantly, pulling her into his arms, covering her eyes, pressing her face into his neck. “Don’t look. Don’t look, mi vida,” he whispered, shaking. “I’ve got you.”

Sage sobbed into his collar, clutching him like the world had just tried to end and missed by inches.

The monster disappeared back into the woods.

Sage pulled back, breath hitching. “Rowan…”

She took a step, but Wednesday stopped her. One glance was enough. What was left of Rowan lay torn and still.

Wednesday swayed.

Then dropped.

“Wednesday!” Sage caught him, panic snapping her into motion. She lifted him, not caring who saw, and ran back toward the lights of the festival.

The first outcast she spotted was a siren.

“Help me,” she said, voice shaking. “Please.”

And the night never went back to normal after that.
