Sage spoke in a hurried, slightly dazed tone, her words tumbling over one another as her dead heart raced. On the other end of the line came Carlisle’s familiar, calming sigh. It grounded her more than she wanted to admit.

She glanced around her dorm room, listening for movement beyond the thick stone walls before finally inhaling a breath she didn’t need. The silence pressed in, heavy and watchful. Sage stared down at her hands, at the slightly chipped black polish clinging to her nails. Her thumb worried nervously at her middle finger, a habit she hadn’t broken in decades.

“Why can’t I get Wednesday out of my head?” she whispered. “Why does the burning in my throat disappear when he’s near? I feel… human around him.” Her voice cracked. “Why? Please tell me. Or lie to me.”

Her composure fractured.

Sage clenched the phone tighter, listening desperately for any answer. Any miracle explanation that didn’t end with her losing her mind over a human boy. Outside, the sky darkened, clouds gathering thick and slow beyond the spider-webbed circle window. Her eyes flicked toward it as the cold crept in, familiar and comforting like an old friend settling beside her.

Carlisle’s voice hummed gently in her ear, soft and steady, threading calm through her spiraling thoughts.

“Sage,” he murmured, “you aren’t going mad, my dear. You’ve simply found your mate. And by the sound of it… your fated mate. The one meant to walk with you through eternity.”

The words landed like thunder.

Faint voices drifted through the line. The Cullens, murmuring among themselves, the sound distant yet warm. Family. Always family.

Sage’s mind reeled. Her mouth fell open as the realization sank in. A fated mate. Another one. And of all people—

Wednesday Addams.

Her fingers twitched violently, her thumbnail digging into the black polish, chipping it further as she tried to anchor herself. A shuddering breath escaped her lips as she forced herself back into reality.

“Dad…” she whispered.

The word slipped out before she could stop it. Not Carlisle. Not Dr. Cullen. Dad. He had earned the name long ago.

“What do I do?” Her voice was barely there. “What if I mess this up?” A silent, dry sob tore free, her shoulders trembling.

“Sage, my darling,” Carlisle said softly. “You won’t. You’re extraordinary. And Wednesday will love you in his own way. The Addams are… unconventional lovers, but fiercely loyal ones. With his parents, I’m certain you’ll be more than fine.”

His reassurance wrapped around her like a blanket.

“You have us,” he continued. “Always. We’re right here, backing you.”

Sage nodded even though he couldn’t see her. She moved to her bed and sank down onto it, phone still pressed to her ear. Outside, the clouds thickened, folding into one another as evening settled in. Cool. Grey. Perfect.

They said their goodbyes, and when the call ended, silence returned.

But this time, it didn’t feel so empty.

Enid returned a few hours later.

Her presence burst into the room like sunlight, humming softly as she danced across the floor, dropping her bag without a care. She didn’t notice Sage at first, sprawled across her bed in a starfish position, staring at the ceiling like it might answer her questions.

Then Enid froze.

Sensing the gloom immediately, the werewolf climbed onto the bed without hesitation, draping herself over Sage’s cold form. Her warmth was steady and grounding, her body heat unfazed by the vampire’s chill. She nuzzled into Sage’s neck, resting there like she belonged.

They lay like that for a moment. Quiet. Breathing.

“Want to talk about it?” Enid asked softly, her breath warm against Sage’s skin.

Sage hummed in agreement. Enid sat up and waited, cross-legged, eyes gentle and patient. Sage slowly pushed herself upright and met her gaze.

She knew how sacred a mate bond was. Vampires and werewolves disagreed on almost everything, but this was the one truth they shared.

“I found my fated mate,” Sage said evenly.

Enid’s face lit up instantly, joy breaking across her features. She barely had time to react before Sage added, quietly,

“It’s Wednesday.”

There was no pause.

Enid flung her arms around Sage, hugging her tight before she could even blink. “I’m so happy for you, babe!” she squealed. “Even if he’s a total psycho. Like, actually unhinged. But he works with you.”

Sage laughed softly despite herself, hugging her back. “Don’t tell anyone,” she said, pulling away just enough to look Enid in the eyes. “Not until I tell Wednesday.”

Enid nodded vigorously, zipping her lips theatrically before melting back into Sage’s arms.

The storm outside finally broke.

And somewhere deep inside Sage, so did something else.
