High Hopes

Twenty Five - "I'm fine."

I ran to his body just as it dropped. I have no idea where the bullet was aimed. Cops ran to the guy and handcuffed him. Paramedics are with the other guys the police shot while the police handcuff them.

I look down at Gabe and hold his hand as he lies on the ground. Blood is coming from his stomach; a spot where serious damage may have happened. He stares at me almost the whole time until paramedics push me away to care for me and put Gabe into an ambulance.

"I'm fine." I sob as one of the paramedics shine a light into my eyes.

"Alyssa!" My aunt and uncle come running towards me, their faces a stressed wreck.

"I'm okay. I want to see Gabe." I sob more, not caring who sees me this way. As I look now, it's just about our entire school.

"We need to make sure you're okay first. God forbid anything more would happen to you." Uncle Lucas put his hand on my hand.

I ignore his comment and look behind him. "Where's Mike?"

"He was just here a second ago." Aunt Laura moves out of my uncle's arms and walks back towards the house.

The paramedic moves to my cut and puts a lotion on it before placing a large bandage on it. "You are going to have to see a doctor to check on your wrist. It may not be hurt more than it was, but it's wise."

"I don't need to-" I am cut off by my uncle taking me out of the ambulance.

"Thank you. I will schedule an appointment with her doctor soon."

"I am fine." I walk back into our house, ignoring the reporters coming at me with their microphones.

"She won't be talking anytime soon." My uncle yells and closes the front doors.

Most of my friends are inside already. I see them sitting in the living room. Instead of talking to them, I walk straight to my room. Why does my life have to be so complicated? As far as I know, I haven't wronged much. I miss Wisconsin. I miss my parents. I miss my life.

There's a knock on my door just as I sit on my bed. "Come in." I groan.

Jesse slips in and closes the door behind him. I close my eyes and lay back on my bed.

"You okay?" I feel the bed sink down next to me.

"As okay as anyone would be after getting kidnapped." I look down at the gown that I'm still wearing. I shake my head and get up to change.

"They postponed the ceremony. Too many people were here I guess." Jesse follows me to my closet.

"Why would that be? I'm the slut or whatever they're calling me." I dig through my clothes until I find a pair of light wash jeans and a short sleeve shirt.

"People just do that for gossip, you know? I'm sure they just wish they were like you." Jesse smirks and leans forward to kiss me. I let his lips connect with mine, instantly feeling disgusted with myself.

"I'm taking a shower." I bring my clothes into the bathroom and lock the door behind me.

To be honest, I feel as far away from everyone at this moment. It's not that I don't have friends, because I do. But what if they weren't really my friends? I suppose I am over exaggerating since they are all here; worried. I'm just on an emotional roller coaster right now. I get out of my ruined gown and throw it on the ground, not wanting to remember what I experienced. I put plastic over my cast and step into the warm water.

I've stood in the shower for what feels like hours when someone else knocks on my door. I sigh loudly as I turn off the water, not wanting to deal with anyone else.

"I'll be out in a second." I yell, slipping into my clean clothes, careful off my now wet bandage and plastic on my wrist. I pull off the plastic and quickly brush my hair into a messy bun.

I open the bathroom door and am instantly engulfed in a group hug between two other people.

"Oh my gosh. I can't believe what you've been through." Kendra gasps and grips harder.

"We should've just ditched our parents' and drove you home." Kayla pulls away with a guilty look.

"It wasn't any of your guys' faults." I give a weak smile and walk further into my room.

"Why were you walking anyways?" Kendra plops down on my bed. They are both still in their dresses for the ceremony.

"Why don't you guys get your stuff and come back here for 9. You can sleep over." I dodge the question, desperately wanting to go and see Gabe.

"Alright. We'll see you later." They leave my room. I wait a minute before heading down the stairs. Jesse and his father are still here, along with Tanner and Mike.

"Alyssa." Mike rushes over to me when he notices I'm standing at the bottom of the stairs. "I should've just forced you to come when you walked away. It could've just been us."

"It's fine." I hug him and nestle my head in his shoulder for a second before pulling away. "Things happen."

I head towards the front door, ready to get to Gabe until I feel a hand on my back. Of course.

"Tanner." I whip around and fake smile at him.

"Are you okay?" He searches my face.

Too many people ask me that. "Just tired. Look, I gotta go but I'll see you tomorrow?" I raise my eyebrows and open the door.

"Sure." He nods and turns back to my aunt and uncle.

"Where are you going?" Mike hurries after me as I head to my car. Surprisingly, all the media has left.

"To see Gabe." I answer quickly, opening the door and getting in.

"You shouldn't drive like this. Move." Mike pulls me out and I roll my eyes. I head to the passenger side and hop in as he pulls out and heads to the hospital.

A/N: That chapter was just a filler and it's short. I just want to hold up the suspense for you as to how Gabe is. So I barely looked at my wattpad the whole vacation, not expecting to get 450 views. Now I have 500 and I thank all of you for that. South Carolina was a ton of fun. I did get sun poisoning one day but I was fine after that.
