There was a bit of tension in the room, if Y/n were to be honest.

She held her head high, feeling stares follow her as she walked towards a person who, unsurprisingly, held equal interest. It wasn't as if the conversations around her ceased, but the eyes on her back lingered long enough for her to feel the familiar itch on the back of her neck.

Despite popular belief, Y/n did not get to her position off of luck, so she was somewhat trained to handle the pressure with grace. In her favorite pair of kitten heels, Y/n was in a positive mood, though her expression would cause others to infer otherwise.

An event such as the current one she was attending created opportunities for networking, and Y/n was happy to participate. The difference was that Y/n has always been extremely purposeful, and she did not enjoy playing the game of learning a name she wouldn't remember a week from now. No, Y/n knew exactly who she was there to meet. Luckily for her, the person holding her interest knew exactly what he wanted as well.

"Y/n, head of operations at I/n, lovely to meet you."

Her introduction, while what others would call lacking in warmth, was met with a slight smirk as C/n clasped her outstretched hand in an iron hold.

"C/n, it's a pleasure."

He knew she knew who he was.

"I prepared a table for us, if you don't mind," C/n motioned to an area that was roped off for reserved seating.

"Not at all," Y/n followed him as someone held open the rope for them to pass, "though I'm quite impressed by how prepared you are."

"What can I say," he replied dryly.

The table C/n chose was off to the side; far enough for their conversation to remain private, but close enough for prying eyes to get a good view. A single-stemmed flower stood proud in the center of the otherwise minimally decorated table.

Once seated across from each other, neither party tried to hide that they were assessing the other. Their stern expressions gave nothing away, yet passerbys watched, unable to look away as two of the most elusive and powerful figures were being uncharacteristically spotted.

C/n made a motion to someone outside of Y/n's view, and not a minute passed by when a steaming cup of coffee was placed in front of her.

"So you've done your research, I suppose," Y/n spoke before lifting the steaming cup to her lips.

"I'd feel offended if you expected any less of me," C/n replied with a raised eyebrow.

Y/n nodded, "I'm not surprised. Though why I'm the only one with a drink remains to be answered."

"I already had my cup today, and while I know you enjoy being sociable," Y/n's lip slightly twitched at that, "you know why I had this table prepared."

"Do I?" she inquired coolly.

"Yes— you do, so you can drop the act."

Y/n raised an eyebrow, "Have you considered that there is no act?"

His lips straightened out into a line, and Y/n once again held back a smile.

"Just give me your hand already."

This time, it was Y/n who smirked as she placed her hand in his from across the table, "Who knew you were such a romantic."

Ignoring her comment, C/n smoothly slid a ring onto her left hand— an action that heightened the murmurings in their surroundings. He held her hand gently, much more gently than Y/n would care to admit to.
