Chapter 13: What The Voices Told Me

----

"KIARA."

I looked over at Cecil but he was looking out the window, staring off at something. I also looked at Andrew, but he just started the vehicle and made his way onto a main road and continued in silence. I looked around then, wondering if a Guardian had caught up with us.

"Kiara." They repeated. With no one near me, his voice sounded far too familiar.

"Who are you?"

"It's me. Thorn."

I looked both at Cecil and Andrew again. Neither of them seemed bothered by the fact that I was almost freaking out. I could feel the tension between them, since usually they would be chatting up a storm about our escape.

"How am I able to communicate with you?" I pushed.

"That's a question I don't have an answer too."

"Wow, you're a bunch of help."

"No need for the sarcasm. I need to know something -- have you been in anyone else's head besides mine?" He dismissed me.

"Why?"  I might be hearing voices in my head, but I wasn't planning to share all my deepest darkest secrets with "Thorn".

"Please. I need to know." His voice calmed down and there was a slight gentleness in it, which actually surprised me due to him demanding about a second ago.

"Yes."

"Who? Leo or Hayden?" He asked eagerly.

"Leo -- who's Hayden?" There was silence, just like in the vehicle. I tried to push more questions at Thorn, but it was almost as if a wall went up. What the heck was that? He just came praying into my head without letting me 'question' him. Jerk.

"A distant brother of mine." He finally answered. I could feel the connection between us, I didn't feel closed off.

"Your brother?" My thoughts probably sounded just as shocked as I felt.

"Yes, but if you haven't heard of him -- I only fear for the worst." Thorn finished with sadness slipping into his voice -- or well I thought so. I would never get used to this.

I didn't know how to respond, so I decided to change the subject, "Thorn," I started, it felt weird to say his name, "have you ever gotten, uh, injured in any way?"

"Yes plenty." He scoffed. He seemed to like the idea of my topic changer I suppose.

"Have you ever, like, healed?" I know this must've sounded dumb because of course he healed! But I just didn't know who would believe me -- so why not the voice in my head?

"What are you getting at, Kiara?" He said cutting to my punch line. I don't know why but I liked the sound of my voice on his tongue.

"I don't know how to explain it, but recently I got injured --"

"What?!" I was shocked by his sudden outburst. "Isn't Andrew looking after you?"

Now it was my turn to outburst. "Woah, woah, what? How do you know Andrew?"

"I was the one who sent them after you."

I don't know why, but I felt a pinch of betrayal. Why didn't they tell me? Why would they keep this from me? I knew they were special associates of the royal family, but why didn't they tell me it was the three Royal brothers that were in my head?

"Cecil," I broke the silence, "who is Thorn?" As soon as the name left my mouth, he quickly snapped his head in my direction and looked me like I had grown another head. "Well?" I asked when he didn't say anything. Cecil just looked at his father.

"Will one of you answer me!" I yelled, feeling my blood pressure rise due to the fact that I was being ignored -- well somewhat.

"How do you know of him?" Andrew finally gave in, still looking at the road.
I didn't know whether I should tell them about the voices in my head, they'd probably think I'm crazy. I just pursed my lips. I felt Cecil looking at me, waiting for my answer.

"It's what the voices told me." I whispered. It sounded better in my head to be honest.

"What?" Now Andrew peered at me through the review mirror.

"I," I started, " I can hear him." I cringed. That didn't sound right, but thankfully Cecil was there to save me. Somewhat.

"In your head? You can hear him?"

"His thoughts. We can also communicate, but it doesn't seem to last long. Sometimes I black out and see through their vision --"

"Their?" Andrew and Cecil both questioned me.

"Yeah," I said a little unsure, "I hear Thorn and Leo's voices." I looked over at Cecil, who just had his eyebrows together, like he was trying to figure this out. "You only hear the two of 'em?" He asked after a while.

"Yeah,"

"Have you met anyone named Hayden?" Andrew pushed.

"Yeah who is Hayden?" I asked as my curiosity grew at the mysterious name.

"He's the third brother." Cecil as if it were obvious. But it wasn't to me, so I returned him a look of confusion."He's the third Prince, Leo and Thorn are the others. Each shares a special gift --"

"Yeah yeah, just tell me why he isn't answering." I interrupted.

"As the lore says," Cecil said referring to his ancestors history, "if one of the chosen with curse doesn't answer, it means that they have perished to the heavens."

"Wait -- so a dude is dead?" I asked taken back. "I just though he was stubborn ..." I muttered more to myself.

"It appears so, but why would someone kill him?" Cecil asked no one in particular.

"Why do you think it's murder?" I asked a bit stunned by his sudden conclusion

"It's always murder. Someone killed him, meaning Thorn or Leo could be next. " Andrew finished. "We have to get to the airport now."
