"Li–little one..." My eyes snapped to Varun. He was barely conscious, his head lolling slightly to the side, and his lips were trembling. My gaze drifted unwillingly yet unable to stop to the dark bruise blooming across his cheek, the deep purple merging with angry blue.
It does something to me, watching someone you once trusted look like this. It is so difficult to turn your hero into a villain.
My throat tightened, but the storm inside me had no direction. In front of me stood them demanding truth like they had a right to it.
Truth. What truth? Which truth? The irony made me want to laugh.
My fingers curled slightly at my sides as I looked at them. Strangers wearing the faces of people who were supposed to be mine.
What do I tell them? Where do I even begin?
They were never there, not in the nights that broke me, not in the days I stitched myself back together with trembling hands. They weren't part of the story that shaped me.
So how do they suddenly deserve its truth?
"I don't know which truth you are expecting. When you all have never been part of my life, that holds the truth about my life."
I exhaled slowly, forcing the ache in my chest to stay hurried.
"I want you to let him go," I added, my eyes flicking once toward Varun before returning to them. "And do not interfere in my life." And just like that, I turned.
"So what can I do to make myself worthy of knowing the truth?" Atharyu's voice echoed in the empty room.
My steps faltered. I turned slightly, not enough to face him completely.
"I didn't want you to interfere in my life," I said, keeping my tone distant. "And if you can unravel the past by yourself, maybe then."
"I don't know. Truth be told, I don't know."
Because I really didn't.
The truth wasn't a straight line. It was a mess, twisted, and shattered. I couldn't separate anymore.
I took another step but froze. A loud crash echoed from outside, sending a jolt through my body. My heart slammed violently against my ribs, instincts screaming before my mind could catch up.
"Stop." Atharyu moved instantly toward the door; Aditya followed him quickly without a word.
I stayed where I was. And Shaurya stayed beside me.
My teeth sank into my lower lip as anxiety clawed its way up my throat, and a soft hiss escaped from my mouth.
"Nothing and nobody will harm you." He voiced out the promise to me steadily. With his hand closed around mine in a firm, protective, and unyielding grip.
