Brei Ida nodded once. Then she turned to Helix, and you could literally see her muscles tensing.
"WHAT. In. The. World. Were. You. THINKING. You. IDIOT?" she hissed. I was so lost I looked at Carter, then when she had no idea, to Callista, and finally, to Selina, who just shook her head at me.
"No respect, I tell you. Nope, not here." she muttered grumpily to herself. I rolled my eyes. Helix and Brei started arguing, so I pulled out my phone and played my favorite calming song that my mom always played for me to make me go to sleep. Even though it's in Swahili, I have every single single word memorized. It didn't take long for the both of them to shut up. Brei Ida glanced between me and Helix, who was giving me quite the condescending look.
"Nice girl, good song, but if you don't tell them, I will." she snapped at him. Then she paused and looked at me. I blushed and continued glaring back at Helix.
"You didn't tell her about Key, did you, Helix? Why didn't you tell her about Key? She has a right to know. Shouldnt' she at least know why you're in love with her?" she crossed the line there. I noticed Carter's eyes had widened and her face paled.
"He's not in love with me!" I yelled, just as he yelled, "I'm not in love with her!" then we glowered both at Brei and each other.
"Maybe I don't want her to know about key. Maybe I think the past should stay the past. You're cutting open a papercut wound with a sword. I'm not telling her." he concluded.
"Now wait just a second. You are going to tell me exactly who this Key person is. Right, Helix?" I demanded sweetly, probably sounding like the smartest three-year-old to ever live.
"Fine. Key was a friend of...mine. She came on a mission with us once. Let's just say, uh, our next mission was to find her killer. That's all I'm going to say." he directed that last fragment to Brei Ida, who simply rolled her eyes in disgust.
"You are quite the liar, Helix, we all know that. But we didn't know you were so bad under supervision of a princess. Especially since Key was her friend, not yours." Selina spouted out knowledge no one else should have ever known. Helix glared at her.
"That's... impressive. How you knew what you said, I don't even want to know. The information Helix said was true, as was Selina's. Key was both of our friends. Mine for many years, but Helix and her, well, sorry Meredith..." she faded out. I looked over to Helix, feeling like a 5-ton brick had just been tied to my heart. He had a sad look in his eyes, but before I could say I was sorry for being a jerk, Callie exploded.
"HELIX CHOI! YOU DIRTY, NO GOOD, ROTTEN LIAR!" she yelled. Everyone in the room jumped and stared at her. Her dark eyes blazed with anger. Brei rolled her eyes and clutched her sister's shoulder, whispering something in her ear. She opened her mouth to say something, but before anything could make its way out, there was a loud rapping at the door. Helix and Callie both grimaced, making me consider the chances that there might possibly be a cold-blooded killer standing outside our door. Then again, who invites a murderer to stay with them? Helix opened the door, and in walked a middle aged white woman with bleach-blond hair and stunning blue eyes. I resented her immediately. She handed Helix a pink envelope, which I could tell he had very much distaste for. As soon as she had given an acknowledging nod to the rest of us in the room and left, closing the door silently behind her, Helix tossed the envelope behind him. It was meant to land in the trash can, but Callista caught it, frowning, and tore it open.
"Callie." he whined, shoulders slouching, bottom lip stuck out, arms crossed. Of course, this only made her laugh.
"Don't read that letter, Callie," Helix warned, "it'll just lead to defeat. You remember that mission I wouldn't let you go on?" a strange question, but she answered.
"You mean the one when you were gone for three weeks? How could I forget?" she added the last part under her breath.
"Yeah, that one. I didn't plan on being fought by an angry guard. I especially didn't plan on losing." he frowned and rubbed his shoulder.
"Angry guard? Where were you?" Callie demanded.
"Somewhere in Tokyo. Guy musta been filthy rich."
"Well how do you know that?"
"Callie, the man has a freakin' castle."
"How was I supposed to know that?"
"SHUT UP!" Carter shouted across the room.
"We are discussing a life-and-death matter here!" Callie called back.
"Yeah right." Carter muttered, and turned over.
"Shiitake mushrooms, now I can't sleep. Thanks a lot, you...let's see, Helix, Callie, Brei, Selina, Meredith...thanks a lot, you five!" she completed her statement a little late, because by the time she was done, Callie had left, leaving the door hanging wide open. Helix yelled after her and then stormed out to follow her. Brei Ida and Selina nodded at the door in unison. Kinda scary, right? But we left anyway, getting seemingly-casual glances from all the guys who apparently worked there.
