Average school morning in Oakland, California: Trip out the door of your apartment, stumble up the stairs of the filthy bus taking you to school, get jostled by the jocks from the football team, hide in the locker room until you know the mean girls are gone, sleep with your eyes open through math class, flinch so hard you get a migraine in biology while dissecting chickens, leaving chemistry with a deafening ringing in your ears from that last explosion, wear earbuds all the way through band sectionals, lean away from the bell that signifies the end of the day, trudge into the girls locker room to get ready for your volleyball game, win against Silas’s schoolgirls, change quickly into cheer uniform and get on the bus to San Francisco, lose miserably, go home, lose your spare set of car keys in your purse, go to bed, wake up at 2 a.m. with a bad attitude.
