Chapter 18
After I left the house I knew I was acting out, I just can't help it. Everyone acts like I should just dive completely into this new world and be okay with everything; well I'm not. Even though there is an obvious attraction between Darren and I, the very thought of being bond to someone for eternity ruffles my feathers. I wasn't able to chose and I living out some ancient prophecy seems less than savory in my opinion.
I walked to the bus stop on the other side of the university. The campus was deserted, barely any lights were on and I immediately felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I should turn around, I know I should, but to get any alone time these days I have to run off into the night.
As I sat on the bench I thought about where I could go. My apartment was probably still trashed with a broken door, so I decided on the diner. I hoped the bus would come soon because I knew Darren would only allow me a short amount of time to cool off before my ass is dragged back to the house.
That eerie feeling I got as I walked to the bus stop now slithered into my stomach, coiling like a venomous snake, I was being watched. These days it was hard to tell friend from foe but I wasn't willing to stick around for it. Especially since a friend would have stepped from the shadows by now.
There was a gas station a few blocks from the stop that was lit up like Christmas. I quickly got up from the bench a hurriedly walked to the station. Everything was quiet except my sneakers hitting the pavement. I counted my steps to keep my crazy thoughts at bay and that's when I heard it. Paws hitting pavement. I stopped just to make sure I wasn't imaging it and sure enough I heard it for a second then nothing. I quickened my pace to a light jog and heard heavy breaths coming from the animal behind me as it too started to pick up it's pace. I didn't even look back as I flat out ran around the corner.
The gas station was in sight but I had the feeling that if I didn't give it my all I wouldn't make it. I ran like I never have before and recklessly crossed the street with cars whizzing by which warranted a few honks. I made it to the parking lot and into the blinding light. I turned to see where my stalker went but I didn't see any wolves in sight, no odd men lurking and no pissed off Darren. I still had the off feeling but at least I wasn't alone anymore, at least I wasn't in the dark.
I am still breathing hard when I turn back towards the store. As I pass the pumps a black SUV pulls up and stops directly in front of me. The window rolls down and it's him.
"Get in." Darren commands.
I raise an eyebrow and don't move a muscle.
Darren growls a little then adds, "Please."
I go to open the door behind the driver's side and Darren tells me to get up front. When I get in I notice it is just us, he hasn't brought any back up or thankfully my Gran.
"I don't want to go back to the house." I weakly say. I really didn't, I was so tired of that place and being surrounded by so much shit that I would happily sit at the gas station all night.
"Fine. We can go somewhere else." Darren said as he pulled out onto the street.
"Where?" I asked. I was curious now.
"Are you up for a road trip?" I nodded. "Then I want to show you where I was born."
