Chapter 7
On that note, David and I almost sprint over to Jack, who immediately turns and starts leading the way.
After a few minutes, we walk into a room with “Medical Room” written on the door in bright red writing.
Sure enough, there is Trent, lying in bed, bandages wrapped around his head. He is staring up at the ceiling, not moving a muscle. David goes to his bedside.
“Hey, what up dude?” he says in a calm quiet voice to Trent, who just stares at the ceiling and mumbles something incomprehensible. David sighs, obviously he had hoped for more out of him.
“Kayla was the one that found you, if it wasn’t for her you’d be dead-“
“Ssshh!” Jack cuts him off sharply. Death isn’t the best thing to talk about when he’s in this state. David clears his throat then walk back out the door, he pauses at the door frame and smiles at Trent.
“I’ll come see you tomorrow,” Then he is gone. I have to agree with Jack on this one. David doesn’t say the best things in a hospital.
“Trent, did you see who attacked you?” is all Jack says. No answer comes from Trent’s mouth. No mumbles either this time. He just stares up. Behind him, a nurse is filing some paperwork, not listening to a word of our conversation. There is a few seconds of silence. Then Trent says something that no one can understand. His voice is muffled and he doesn’t even move his lips. Jack suddenly moves closer and puts his ear closer to his mouth. “What?” he asks calmly. Trent swallows.
“Kayla?” he says, as if asking me if I’m here. Jack stands upright and looks at me.
“I’ll give you guys some privacy,” then he walks out and clicks his tongue at the nurse who immediately follows behind him. I lean on the side of Trent’s bed.
“How are you feeling?” I don’t actually expect an answer, all the more reason to be freaked out by his strong, healthy voice.
“Did you see who it was? Who attacked me?” His voice is deep and angry, yet still quiet. I take a small step away from the bed.
“No- I just found you passed out. How are you talking?”
“You tell me. I try to talk to someone else and nothing comes out!”
“Wait. So your telling me, that you can only speak to me?” now this really didn’t make sense, “I think the nurse should check your head again,”.
“Kayla,” His voice goes demanding, “I know what’s happening with me. I don’t know why, but I can only speak to you.” I think he’s telling the truth.
“Should I tell the nurse?”
“NO! something is not right. This isn’t normal. We can’t tell anyone until we have figured it out. The last thing we need is more panic,” I guess he’s right. I don’t know what the shuttle would do with more problems. First, Trent gets attacked. The course gets changed. I just remembered.
“They changed the course,” I don’t know why I blurt it out like that, but it needs to be said.
“What? Where to?” He sounds shocked.
“I don’t know. I think David’s called NASA. I’ll tell you when I find out,”
“Thank you.” He smiles at me. His smile slowly fades as he looks at my neck. “Hey, nice necklace,” I look down and see that he is talking about the necklace David gave me before we boarded.
“Thanks. David gave it to me,” I stroke the white stone.
“It’s a moonstone, you know,” Wow, I didn’t know that. I would have said more but Jack came in.
“You done?” he asked.
“Yep.” I smile, then remember our conversation. “Didn’t get much out of him, just mumbles and stuff,” I lie.
Jack nods and the nurse comes in as well, immediately going to the counter to continue her paperwork.
I take one more look at Trent then walk out the door, headed for the control room. I intend to find out just what NASA said about our new course, and if it can tell me anything about why Trent can only talk to me…
