Chapter 13

The next week came quickly and it was time for us to head down to the Wall. We got into our our usual positions in front of the wall, waiting for it to rise. Our mission was to go and return safely. However, something felt off about today. Something was going to go wrong, hopefully the kids would be ok and so would those I cared for.
"Advance!" Erwin's hard voice called out. His horse reared up before galloping ahead. We followed after him in our set positions. "We will now begin the 57th expedition beyond the walls!" The sun shone down on us as we exited the walls. We crossed through the deserted town and soon heard Hanji call out about a 10 meter class coming towards us. The cover team headed straight towards it leaving the rest of us free to carry on.
"Oluo, sir, do you think the other recruits can defeat the titans?" Eren spoke up as we rode.
"Huh? What have you been doing this whole month?" Oluo question irritated. "Listen up brat. The success of expeditions depends on how well you can avoid fighting the Tita..." He was cut off by yet again biting into his own tongue. Bursting into laughter, I had trouble seeing where I was going due to tears welling up in my eyes from laughing so hard.
"Dear God. Oluo, you really are stupid aren't you?" I taunted.

We made it out of the walls and instantly split off into different directions. The new recruits were our communication lines while we continued on through the deserted land. Birds flew up ahead and the sun shone brightly. The blue sky gave off a feeling of serenity, however the sound of titans instantly ruined that feeling and brought about dread, adrenaline and death. A red flare shot off in the distance. Multiple red flares were fired following that one, and with a glance over the the far off area, I prayed for the kids safety. Some of them looked like they could handle themselves, however others looked like they'd cry at the sight of a nearby titan. Especially if it came after them. Then again I suppose that would be normal for the new recruits unlike us, their seniors. We knew how to handle it and a rare few, myself included, thrived off of the thrill of being chased or the thrill of the kill. A titan right in front of us and so with a grin, I charge off ahead, ignoring the shouts of the others. Heading straight at the titan, I stood in my saddle and launched myself up into the air. Using the hooks, it embed itself into the skin of the titan in front of me. Zooming closer to it, I used my weight to avoid the hand coming towards me by weighing myself down and swinging beneath the hand. Using the gas, I pushed myself up into the air and got a better angle on the titan. Swinging down towards the neck, I spun around like Levi did many time, and cut deeply into the titans neck. It fell with a thud and I whistled for Raven as I neared the ground. Hearing her neigh, I allowed myself to fall, only to land feet first on the saddle. Laughing manically, I slid down to seat myself on top of the saddle and slipped my feet in the stirrups. Pulling at her reins, we instantly went back towards our own group, joining up into the formation like I had never left. I could see Levi roll his eyes while Eren stared at me shocked and slightly terrified. Guess he'd never seen this side of me before. The side that thrives off of the kill of the titans. Shrugging, I continued on riding as if his expression didn't bug me at all.

About fifteen minutes later, multiple green flares were fired up into the sky. Levi noticed and ordered Oluo to fire one as well.
"Reporting in!" A soldier called, riding up alongside us. "Attack from the rear! The right wing suffered severe losses! Parts of the scouting formation are no longer functional! Please pass this message on to the left!"
"You heard, Petra?" He turned to glance back at her. "Go!"
"Yes, sir!" She responded, veering off to the left away from us. Not long after she left, black flares were shot up into the sky closer to us than we liked. God damn Abnormals!
"Eren, you shoot!" Levi ordered. Eren fumbled for a black flare before firing up into the sky like he was ordered to do. How in the hell were those Abnormals allowed to get this close? What were our men doing? Unless...... unless they had all been killed. But we had never failed this badly at taking down an Abnormal titan before? What could be the reason?
