It was time to leave out and we had finally evacuated everyone and loaded them all onto horses or in the wagons. We began our journey immediately in a formation of a diamond. The Survey Corps were surrounding the villagers to protect them from any oncoming threats. We travelled through the old village then across the open fields. The horses hooves thundering against the dirt, and the sound of the wagon wheels rolling could be heard from any position in the formation.
From my own position on the middle right, I could see little Anna sitting on the wagon. She waved at me with a care free grin on her face, causing me to smile in return. All good things come to an end I'm afraid, especially in this line of work. The sound of a group of Titans approaching quickly reached our ears. My expression instantly turned emotionless upon hearing this, and orders came immediately from Erwin to protect the villagers. Preparing ourselves for a fight, three groups were ordered to fall back and counter the threat. I was a member of one of those groups. Turning Raven around, we galloped towards the oncoming threat. In the group was five titans, two seven meter class titans, and three ten meter class titans. Heading straight towards them, all of us pulled out out swords.
Once close enough, I fired the hooks at some ten meter class. Flying through the air, I watched as others tried taking out the titans near them. A member was caught by the titans hand, so changing my course, I headed towards the hand holding the girl. Cutting through the Titans arm, it fell to the floor with the girl still in the hand. The titan swung its free hand around to try to hit me, but I avoided it by quickly firing my hooks into its leg and swinging down, before then firing my hooks at the ugly things neck. Slashing through the titans neck, I stood on its head as it fell to the floor.
"Rin!" Petra's alarmed voice called out before a high pitched scream caught my attention. Turning quickly, I whistled for Raven as soon as I saw where the scream had come from. A titan had grabbed hold of Anna. The scream had been a mixture of Anna's and her mother's. Oh God. No! Jumping down onto Raven's back, we set off in a straight up gallop.
"Mummy!" Anna's frightened voice called out.
"Anna! No! Somebody help her! Please!" Her mother begged desperately. A member of the Survey Corps went to try to save Anna, however luck wasn't on his side. Half way into the air, :( was grabbed by another titan and crushed. Finally arriving at the titans feet, I jumped off of Raven's back and flew up to grab Anna. I was so close. So close! But before I could grab her, she was lowered, screaming, into the titans mouth, and bitten in half. Time seemed to slow down as I drifted last the titan. My body was frozen in shock and my eyes were wide. Anna's lifeless face stared back at me. Eyes wide in fear and mouth open mind scream. Blood splattered out, hitting my clothes and my cheek, and I didn't even flinch.
"Rin!" Erwin's voice shouted out. My body didn't respond to his alarmed voice and before I knew it, a large force crashed into my side. I was sent flying but a body caught me mid fall. The person grunted and fired their books into a tree. We landed on a branch and the person shouted something I couldn't comprehend as my brain had stopped working due to shock.I'm not sure how long we stayed there, but when I finally got a hold of myself, there was no sight of the rest of the Survey Corps. Pain hit me hard from my side, back and right leg. Letting out some hiss of pain and a curse, I flinched back into what felt like she chest. Tilting my head back, I came to realise that Levi was the one who caught me and I was now sat on his lap.
"Tch. Finally come to your senses have you?" He didn't sound too happy. Then again..... when did he sound happy?
"Where is everyone?" I asked through a groan of pain. Trying to move wasn't a smart move. "Is Anna's mother still alive?"
"She's fine, she was restrained by some of the villagers. The rest of the Scouting Legion are on their way back to the walls with the survivors." He informed me.
"Why are you here with me?" I demanded, anger and pain from now and from what I'd kept inside, coming out.
"I made a promise." He muttered.
"To who?" I scoffed then regretted it when pain hit again.
"To myself." Say what now?..... What promise? Why? Deciding to drop it, I sighed. We had more pressing matters to deal with. "Are you ok?" He asked, surprisingly sounding concerned.
"No. A little kid just died in front of me. I was so close, and yet I couldn't save her! This was my fault. If I had gotten there quicker then........" I broke off, not able to continue the sentence. Tears poured down my cheeks as I sobbed in anguish, my emotions getting the better of me.
"It wasn't your fault that she died. The danger of being of being eaten is everywhere." Levi comforted, rubbing his hand up and down my back.
"Is this - how you felt - when - Isabel and - Farlan - died?" I got out between sobs. He was silent for a while before he nodded. "I'm so - sorry. I - didn't know." I apologised, wrapping my arms around his neck in an awkward hug. He froze in shock before somewhat relaxing into my awkward embrace. After I had calmed myself down, we climbed down the tree and whistled for our horses. A responding neigh informed me that Raven was alive and well. Thank God. Two horses came trotting up to us and stopped a few metres away. Levi watched as I went to mount Raven, but pulled me back instead, away from my horse.
"What?" I asked confused.
"You're not riding alone in your condition." He strictly informed me. My mouth fell open as I turned to look at him in shock.
"Say what?" I scoffed. "I'm fine." Reaching up to Raven's saddle, I winced at the pain that went through my body. Levi watched me with a smug look on his face. "Fine." I huffed. "Maybe you're right." He smirked and pulled Raven's reins over her head, leading her along, before then mounting his own horse. He gestured for me to come closer and offered me his hand.Reaching up, he pulled me up behind him. Groaning in pain, I rest my head against him. Levi let out a 'tch' as he felt my forehead hit his back. "Levi?" I murmured.
"What?" He grunted.
"Thank you." I whispered with a smile, feeling my eyes shut as the pain caused unconsciousness to take me under.
