Frozen on the spot, words fail to escape me.

Did mom disclose the threat to his life after I begged her to keep it a secret?

A cloud of frustration hovers over me, unable to articulate any form of response that would satisfy him.

How can I speak when Devin has been adamant on wanting to assist me with the investigation, only for him to learn that I kept the threat to his life a secret?

Taking advantage of my disoriented state, Devin storms into the main entrance, making sure to bump his shoulder into mine while doing so.

Sighing in defeat, I make a mental note to lash out at mom later.

"It all makes sense," he vociferates, "every time I asked you to keep me on the loop about the investigation, you always brushed me off and didn't bother to answer any of my questions."

"How could you keep something like that from me?!"

After shutting the door, I whirl around to face his choleric expression.

"I don't know what mom told you—"

"Everything you couldn't!" he interrupts me in indignation.

My silence fuels his rage.

"What the hell, Anaya?!" his voice tone escalates, "If the roles were reversed, I would have freaking told you right away that your life was in danger!"

As his temper magnifies, I am reminded of all those nights he got into fights with me under the influence.

He would say some of the nastiest things to me because he blamed me for Lita's death.

But tonight, it's different.

I don't smell a hint of alcohol on his breath, which makes this conversation hurt ten times more.

"I gave you every opportunity to confess what you were hiding from me," he continues in disdain, "But you went around and said nothing while you were fully aware that some psychotic organization was out to get me—"

"Do you have any idea who these people are?!" I interject in impatience.

In this moment, I no longer care to be civil.

For he needs to know what kind of organization we're up against.

"Those monsters have been tormenting me for these past months and almost got me killed! Their criminal organization is extremely dangerous, and they have a track record of orchestrating secret killings for their self-renting interests!" I retaliate, "It was better to keep you in the dark than to ever expose you to that world."

With scrunched brows, Devin folds his arms across his chest, "No matter how dangerous they are, it doesn't give you the right to deprive me of information about Lolita. That's freaking not your call to make!"
