Jason didn't feel like making himself look like much more of a fool this morning but this Manticore was really getting on his nerves. He noticed her fall and his first instinct was to pick her back up, then the spikes seemed to come out of nowhere. He shoved the girl towards Gwen who caught her with surprise dropping her own gladius. "Get to camp!" He told her. Technically Jason wasn't Gwen's superior (which made it a little strange that they were both on guard duty, did Gwen lose a chugging bet with Dakota also?) but in this moment he knew he had to take the lead. He brought his gold coin from his pocket and flicked it. As the coin grew into the staff of a pilum the Manticore came into sight. No longer was this beast a man but now a dog creature that Jason knew was not going to be like anything like Lupita's followers. He circled the monster waiting for it to make the first move and when it pounced Jason took down the beast with ease. He held up his staff as a shield and flung it to the ground towards the end of the tunnel. The Manticore got up limping and began to come at Jason but paused suddenly. It seemed that for some reason he no longer had the desire to devour Jason. The creature morphed into a stocky man in a black suit dusted off his hands and never gave Jason or Camp Jupiter another look. Jason admiring his luck and wondering if it was the shampoo that claimed to be monster replant that he had bought last week, turned and ran through the rest of the tunnel hoping to catchup to Gwen and leave that strange occurrence in the darkness of the tunnel.
