Chapter 14 Visitors
The three of us geared ourselves before moving cautiously back into the house. Damon insisted on going first. Although he didn't say the reason, I knew. Damon would rather risk his life than have me risk my life and he knew that I would have been devastated if I had lost Sam, but that idiot has no idea how devastated I would be if I had lost him. I know that Damon really likes me, I mean, I really like him too. It's just that if it wasn't for the betrothal then I would probably be happy with Damon right now and not have to worry about someone finding out about our secret. I feel really guilty because not only am I not giving Damon the chance to go out there and find a girl good enough to deserve him, I'm also hiding things from my brother, who had always shared everything with me.
My heart feared for Damon, that he will end up injured. It breaks my heart just by thinking about it.
My heart was hammering in my chest. Realizing how nervous I was, I tried to calm myself down, remembering all the hints that I've learned during training. When Damon looked through the peephole, he let out a sigh of relief and nodded to us reassuringly before opening the door. Standing in the doorway were five guys, either in the late teens to early twenties. I was confused, but Damon seemed to know them and so we invited them in.
"Anastasia, your father has sent us," a blonde stated. His eyes were a light emerald color. "My name is Stephen. I will do whatever it takes to ensure your safety."
"I'm Johnathan and it's a pleasure to finally meet you," he saluted enthusiastically as he offered his hand. This kid had a big goofy smile on his face that just makes him look silly. He had warm chocolate brown eyes that were soft and his dark brown hair was tousled. I shook his hand, amused. I'm definitely going to get along with him.
"I'm Brandon and this is my twin Brennan." The two brothers were very much alike, but their personalities are quite different. Brandon has confidence and he seemed like the one who's always in charge (of the two). Brennan was a bit more quiet, but he's someone who chooses to speak only if it's necessary. The twins had shortly cropped black hair and green eyes with gray specks. I gave them each a nod in salute.
"I'm Seth." His salutation was concise. Although Stephen takes up the role of being the leader of the five, it seems as if Seth was the most mature of all of them. Although his eyes were a normal dark brown color, they were intent and piercing, as if he could see deep down into your soul just by making eye contact. I know that he couldn't see anything, even if he was a really good observer. I have learned a lot in the past couple of years and spending time with Damon just reminds me that I need to practice my acting skills. Seth and I continued to stare at each other. The only difference was that he couldn't see me, but I could see him (not in the literal term). I have been observing people ever since I was younger, having nothing better to do when everyone chose to ignore me.
Everyone else was shifting uncomfortably, so I broke the silence. "I'm looking forward to the rest of the time we're going to be spending together," I said genuinely as I waited for him to take my offered hand. He did, but not before staring me for a while longer with a curious expression on his face, probably wondering why he couldn't figure me out. His grasp was a firm, challenging, but I didn't give him anything. He didn't let go of me until Sam coughed. "Have you guys eaten?" I directed the question at all the newcomers. They slowly shook their head. "Damon, Sam, take them up to their rooms and have them clean up first. I'll go make dinner." I didn't wait for their reply as I turned my back on them and headed for the kitchen.
I was out of it. Dad and Mom were in trouble, Daniel and Calvin were strengthening their guards, and here I was, being protected by people who were around my age. I guess I've learned to accept the fact that I was the one protecting, not the one being protected, over the four years of training. I have been reminded nonstop about this and it has been drilled into my head that I need to protect my assignment. The problem at hand is that I don't want to protect him, but I was still forced to keep an eye out for him. Stupid idiot who can't even learn a thing or two to make himself at least less of a burden, I thought. I sighed, remembering that I had to make dinner. Shaking my head to clear up my mind, I decided that the boys will have fried rice. I wasn't in the mood to cook now, nor do I have that much time to spare before they start coming downstairs.
