Chapter 1 scene 5
After leaving for school Jackie decides to return her mothers call and see how things are going at home, but like always their conversations do not end the way she likes them too.
Mom: (talking on the phone with Jackie) Are they being mean to you? Do they make fun of you?
Jackie: (Lying on the bed while on the phone with her mother) No, it's not like that. It's like there is nothing else to talk about but the show.
Mom: They don't know you yet honey. That's all they have to go on right now.
Jackie: They don't know each other either. But that doesn't stop them from having a normal conversation.
Mom: (while putting on makeup, she is talking on the phone with Jackie) I still don't understand why you wanted to go to college on the other side of the country anyway. There are plenty of good schools here in California. And you probably wouldn't be having that problem here.
Jackie: What problem?
Mom: Of people being curious about you. You know you never could handle that very well.
Jackie: You are not helping mom.
Mom: Oh, Jacqueline, don't play the victim. I'm just saying I know why you are putting yourself through this. And you don't even have Mark to help you anymore.
Jackie: (Becomes tense and sits on the bed) I don't want to talk about Mark, mother.
Mom: Alright, alright. Sorry.
Jackie: You think me quitting school is just gonna make everything better?
Stepdad: (calls her mother from the other room) Lilian!
Mom: (Replies) Coming! Sorry! (turns her attention back to Jackie) Honey, I have to hang up now. I'll call you tomorrow. Get some sleep. (Makes Kiss noises on the phone)
Jackie: (Upset) Mom, I'm not gonna be around tomorrow, can you just – (her mother hangs up)
