Scene 23

Catherine and Jackie return home after the plane ride. They have dinner, and some red wine of course. They go to bed where Jackie falls asleep immediately.)

Catherine: (lying on the bed moves closer to Jackie) Hey, are you asleep?

-This was the best birthday ever.

-I like it so much when you're here.

(Moves a little closer and whispers) I love you.

(But of course when she says the three big words, Jackie was asleep the whole time)

Catherine has finally admitted to herself that this girl was different. That this time was the real thing. She finally decided to break the wall she had built to protect herself all these years; and finally she found the person who was worth breaking the wall for.

Scene 24

Jackie is sitting in her dorm finishing her essay, when suddenly her cellphone rings.

Jackie: Hello?

Wade: (Jackie's new manager) Jackie?

Jackie: Who's this?

Wade: It's Wade.

How have you been?

Jackie: Wade? How did you get this number?

Wade: Your mother. I hope that's all right.

Jackie: Yeah, sure. What's up? What can I do for you?

Wade: Well, first, I wanted to say I'm sorry. I haven't contacted you since Mark... you know...

Jackie: That's all right.

Wade: The other thing is, I know you haven't read in a while, but something came in and I really think you might want to take a look at it.

(After a long pause from Jackie) Are you still there?

Jackie: Yeah.

Uh, Wade, I don't know what my mom told you, but I'm not really looking for anything right now. I'm really busy with school.

Wade: I know, I know.

I don't want to waste any time... It's Neptune 26. They're making a feature film out of it. It's gonna be a big holiday release and this time... Tyler is going to be the lead.

Jackie: What are they offering?

Wade: They're not. Not yet, anyway.

Jackie: What do you mean?

Wade: Well, they want you to read for it.

Jackie: Read for it? Why would I audition for the same part twice?

Wade: Look, I've been told it's down between you and maybe two or three others. They are very interested. They contacted me.

Jackie: Wade, like I said, I'm not really looking for anything right now.

Wade: Jackie, I just want you to think about it, right? What's the worst that can happen - you waste a couple of days over Christmas break? Do you really want to see somebody else playing Tyler? I'm gonna let you think about it, give me a couple of days. I'll call you back on Monday, and then you decide.

Jackie: - OK.

Wade: - Great!

It is so great to have you back!

Jackie: I'm not back yet, Wade.

Jackie has to go back to Catherine's for lunch, but this time she needs to find a way to tell Catherine that she is thinking about b=moving back to California and continue her acting career.

Jackie: (sitting around the table while Catherine is serving lunch) It looks great.

Catherine: Thanks.

You're kind of quiet today, porcupine.

Jackie: Am I?

Catherine: Yeah. Is everything OK?

Jackie: Yeah, just, you know, school and stuff.

Catherine: Oh, anything I can help you with?

By the way, if you're taking statistics next semester, let me know, because I have a book you can borrow so you don't have to buy one.

They're really pricey.

Jackie: Thanks. I think I might hold off on taking that class though. I don't know if I'm gonna have time to declare a second major.

Catherine: Really? Why? You're doing so well.

Jackie: Uh...I got a call from Wade on Friday. He's my agent from back in the day.

Catherine: I thought you said you were done with acting.

Jackie: (gets offended) I never said that.

Catherine: (Heart broken) What did Wade say?

Jackie: Uh, he wants me to audition for a Neptune feature over Christmas break.

Catherine: So you're going home for Christmas? Anyway, isn't that job already yours?

Jackie: That's what I said. But, I mean, it has been a while and it's a much bigger project. It would be the same part, but with a slightly different concept.

Catherine: Are you?

Jackie: I'm thinkin' about it. It's kind of scary though. Apparently there's a handful of other people reading for it.

(Catherine starts to build the wall up again, because now she understands that Jackie might go after her career)

Catherine: (gets up, and goes to the kitchen t pour herself some red wine) I think you should.

Jackie: (surprised my Catherine's answer) You do?

Catherine: Yep.

(changes the subject) How's your essay going?

Jackie: Still workin' on it. Just waitin' to see how things will turn out.

Catherine: (Trying very hard not to say something that will hurt Jackie) That's great.
