Note: Back to Sonic's point of view.

It took a few weeks for me to get strong enough to walk again, and by then, I had been moved to a GUN headquarters as they insisted on running some tests on me. I nearly refused to, but Tails eventually convinced me, saying that they may be able to help me more than he could, especially since GUN was acting as an ally right now. There were no more threats - yet - and Eggman was, once again, nowhere to be found.

According to the test results that accumulated over the course of a few more weeks, my energy levels came back up, although according to Tails, they stayed at just below my average. I felt mostly fine, although I had to rest a lot more often than I used to; and one evening, after having run on a treadmill for an hour, an eerie fact rose to the surface. The next few days, they tested it again and again, but the result was always the same. Still, I denied it, saying that it was only because I was still weak. But I would get stronger. I had to.

And so came the day of my birthday. I had barely remembered it myself, but Amy, Cream, and Valentine had thrown together a big bash at the nearby park. There was quite the turnout, with strangers gathering, saying that news of the incidents that had happened the previous months had been leaked into the area already and was spreading. I refused to address it, however, and whenever it was brought up, I would completely ignore it.

I eventually separated myself from the party and sat with my back against a tree, enjoying the warm sunshine that passed between the leaves and rained down on me. People gave me passing glances, but nobody ever approached me while I sat alone. I'm not sure if they simply felt like leaving me alone, or if they were afraid of me -- somehow, I had this constant, aching feeling that people were intimidated by me and that it was slowly escalating. That being said, I felt as though I had met with a drastic personality change. After talking to Amy about it, she had agreed, but insisted that when it came down to it, I was still the same exact person she had fell in love with, and it was probably just a phase, that I would be back to my old self in no time at all. Still cocky, to an extent, just calmer and getting into the habit of distancing myself from everyone else every now and then. Her words, not mine.

"Whatcha doing over here all alone?" A voice suddenly asked, and I raised my eyes to see Amy standing beside me, holding something behind her back. "You used to love your birthday parties because you were the center of attention. And today is an important birthday, after all. You're eighteen!"

"Yeah, well," I brought up a knee and rested an arm on it. "I'm not really feeling it today."

"Too much of a crowd?" She asked, to which I nodded. She shifted her weight from one foot to the next as she seemingly thought. "Wanna go take a walk?"

"Sure, but," I helped myself up with the tree and smirked. "You're not gonna give me that present you're holding behind your back?"

She puffed her cheeks. "Hey, no fair! I wanted to surprise you with it while we walked!"

"Okay, okay," I threw his hands up in defense. "I'll act surprised if that's what you want."

"Good boy!" She chimed with a smile, then started walking beside me. Every so often she would bump into me playfully, and I would do the same in return. Little things like that was our new weird way of flirting. Now that we had time to actually spend time together without death or the fate of the world hanging over our heads, I had realized that she was my lifeline. She is what was keeping me sane as I recovered, always encouraging me and making sure that I was as comfortable as I could possibly be, physically and emotionally. I couldn't ask for anyone better than her.

I didn't deserve anyone as good as her.

"Sonic?" She asked suddenly, and I glanced her way to see the worry that painted her pretty features. "You're staring at the ground. What's wrong?"
