The party was going great. Everyone was having a good time, mingling with one another, catching up or talking about their future plans, eating good food, the works. Although the party was supposed to be one where everyone got along, there was a definite divide between the werewolves and the vampires.

I was standing with Anthony and his mate, Isabella. They were telling me about how they were expecting their next child. I was happy for them, I really was, but I was distracted. The whole incident I had with Kenya was just playing over and over in my head and I felt horrible for it. I wanted to talk to her, but I couldn't seem to find her. I'd looked for her everywhere, but she was nowhere in sight. I guessed maybe she could be back in the pack house, but that wouldn't make sense because she'd never miss a good party. Especially since it was a party where everyone was finally united.

As I scanned the crowd, I spotted Patrick standing with his bloodsucking friends. As much as I hated vampires, Patrick was an okay guy. The only thing I didn't like about him was that he was friends with that Wentz guy. He'd caused so much trouble in our territory over the past few years that almost got him and the guys banished from our land, multiple times. The only reason he was still here was because he - as well as the other three - had a responsibility, to keep Rachael at bay.

"I remember when we used to be able to do this," Wentz muttered under his breath, taking a sip from the bottle of beer he held in his hand, "You know, surrounding by our kinds of people. Friends, families..."

"Our kinds of people are all dead," Joe reminded him sullenly.

"Thanks to Rachael," He grumbled.

"Dude, how many times do I have to tell you? She didn't mean to do it, it wasn't her," Patrick snapped. Before Patrick could continue to say what he wanted to say, Wentz cut him off.

"If I recall correctly, it was your girlfriend who murdered our entire clan while we were gone. She didn't spare a single person. And you want to know why I know it was her? Because they all died the same way. With that black fucking ooze dripping from their eyes and their noses and their-"

"Stop," Patrick demanded, "I don't need to relive that day, thank you very much. And so what if we don't have our friends and families anymore? We have each other and we have Rachael and she's not going to hurt any more people. And that's all that matters."

I didn't understand why Patrick still hung out with those imbeciles. It was obvious he didn't want the same things they wanted. They wanted to rule again. They wanted to be on top of the pyramid again. Patrick didn't want that - he wanted Rachael, and the guys just didn't understand that.

"No matter how much I might miss the old life, or how much I wish things were the way they used to be..." Patrick tacked on to his previous statement, taking a sip of his drink and looking away from his friends.

Okay, maybe I was wrong. But his desire to revert back to the way things used to be wasn't as strong as his friends' desires.

I must've zoned out, listening to their conversation, because the next I knew, Isabella was snapping her fingers in my face, "Bruno!"

I snapped back into reality and asked, "Yeah?"

"Were you even listening to me?"

"No, I'm sorry," I apologized, "I just...I forgot I had to tell someone something. You can tell me all about your baby some other time, okay? I promise." I kissed Isabella on the cheek and waved Anthony goodbye. I walked over to Patrick and his friends.

"...just imagine," Wentz was saying, "Being the top dogs again. Being able to walk wherever we want to. Being able to control what those mutts can and can't do. Being able to-"
