Twenty minutes. Twenty minutes passed and I had yet to start the spell. I adjusted my bloodied sleeve as I gazed down at Kenya's cold body, her lips colored a pale blue and her skin faded gray.
I didn't know what came over me when I volunteered to bring Kenya back. She was dangerous and just another barrier blocking me from what I really want.
"Okay, Brendon, you can do this," I gave myself a little pep talk underneath my breath as I cracked my fingers.
I had no doubt that I could revive the she wolf. The question was whether or not I should bring her back, afraid of what Kenya would do to me when she woke up. Yes, I'd joined her side, but it didn't excuse the things I'd done to her and the pack.
"Come on, Brendon, she's Rachael's friend," I continued to motivate myself, "You like Rachael, so you've got to like her friends too, right?" I looked down at the mutt and gagged, the idea of bringing her back revolting. "Oh god, come on, you can do this. You should do this. It's now or never. It'll make everyone happy again. Rachael will be happy. The pack will be happy. You'd be doing something good. And then Rachael would thank you profusely and maybe, just maybe, give you that second chance you've been waiting a thousand years for." I nodded my head. "Yeah. Yeah..."
I took in a deep breath and held my hands out, taking a quick glance over at the clock hanging on the wall. Its hands had been frozen in place, me having cast a spell that froze time in order for me to get a moment to think. Plus, if I chose not to go through with the spell, then I could disappear effortlessly. I was taking forever to make a decision and one could only freeze time for so long before it started to fuck with things.
"Okay." I still was talking to myself. "You've got this." That's when I envisioned what the pack would do to me after I completed the spell. "Nope, no I don't." I walked away from the hospital bed the lifeless corpse rested on and rubbed the bridge of my nose, realizing that if I refused, I'd be hunted down and killed for sure. There was no escape. "Goddammit." I clenched my teeth as I rubbed my hands together and switched my position. I quickly approached Kenya and placed two hands on each side of her face, bending down and whispering a few words under my breath. I removed my hands and, without a second thought, returned time back to normal. Within an instant, her heart began to beat and a constant beeping started to sound from the monitor attached to her.
Kenya gasped for air, her eyes popping open and glowing a bright red before fading back to their normal color and closing. I'd completed my task and fulfilled my promise, now it was time for me to go.
I turned around and hastily exited out of the room. As I made my way down the hallway in an attempt to leave before anyone could notice me, the hospital burst back into life, nurses and doctors running past me and the sounds of countless heart monitors and the murmur of different television shows filling the air. I shoved my hands in my pockets and hung my head low, wanting to get out of that place as fast as I could unnoticed.
I was so close to escaping, but right as I turned into lobby, I bumped into someone - Anthony. "Leaving so soon?" I gazed up to see him glaring at me.
"Yeah, I think Kenya just came to. They should be taking her into surgery soon, so I was just going to go tell Rachael the good news," I lied, "You know, because she...she's pretty torn up about, um, what happened."
"Everyone is." His face was expressionless. "I was worried that you were going to skip town."
I chuckled. "Me? Skip town? No...I would never."
"Good, because we have eyes everywhere, Urie. You couldn't escape us even if you tried," He calmly informed me as he placed an arm around my shoulder, "Actually, we're going to take a walk to the Bayou. Try anything and, well, I'll kill you."
