The next day, I still didn't go to school. At this point, Erwin was holding me quarantine for my own safety. All of Shiganshina was alerted, actually, for a killer on the loose. There was no reason for that though. He was only after me and my family.
Despite the fact that the news alerted everyone to stay with someone when going out in public, Eren showed up at Erwin's house by himself.
"Um, hi Mr. Smith." His awkward tone carried throughout the house as he stood by the door. "Is Rebel here? I heard she was staying here."
"Sheesh, word gets around town fast, huh?" Erwin mumbled. "Yes, she's here. Come inside." As I sat at the island in the kitchen, Erwin lead Eren to me. He wore a red and yellow plaid shirt under his stressed and dirty brown coat. I found to funny sometimes that Mikasa and Eren even lived together. Mikasa always looked flawless and smelled amazing, while Eren looked like he was some sort of hillbilly farmer. Yet the scruffy look was kind of charming on him.
"I'll leave you two alone." Erwin excused himself as he left for the living room.
"Hey, long time so see." Eren smiled at me as he leaned across the marble counter.
"I know, it feels like forever." I returned the warm smile as I closed my laptop shut. "How have you been?"
"Better than you, it sounds like." He lightly chuckled.
"Yeah, I know." I sighed, followed by some laughs. "I been...so crazy."
"I can imagine." His face was soft as his crystal teal eyes. For someone with such a nasty temper, he could be so gentle when it came to his friends. "You hardly talk to me anymore."
"I know. You'd think now we both go to the same school we'd see each other more."
"Yeah..." He nodded slowly. "You really took an interest in Levi."
I felt my face flush and my eyes dropped; too heavy with shame for me to keep them up. "Yeah..." An awkward silence filled between us, and I felt awful. I remember my first day how excited Eren was to see me. He had always been there for me, especially when dad died, and I blew him off for Levi. "Eren, I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"...I took Levi back."
"What?" He gasped with a sharp breath.
"Well, not totally." I put my hands up defensively. "I just forgave him."
"Rebel," Eren began sternly, taking my hands that were help up. "Why the hell would you take Levi back? After everything he's done, after everything he knew and lied to you. You're a smart girl, how could you do this to yourself?" His voice has escalated into a passionate yell, his eyes like a stormy ocean.
"...Because he said he was sorry." I whispered out.
"He got your mother nearly killed!" Eren threw his hands up. "He knew everything about his fucked up uncle, and he kept his mouth shut! And you forgave him because he said he was sorry? He screwed you over, Rebel, he's an asshole! He's always been an asshole!"
"I know." I hardly breathed out, my voice trembling. "He is. But...there's good in everyone. He's a good guy-"
"No, he is not." Snarled Eren. "For all you know, he could be helping his uncle and you could be next in the hospital, or worse, you could be..." He trailed off, his voice cracking with thick emotions. His eyes brimmed with water as he shook his head. "You're like a sister to me. If you get yourself killed over one guy...I wouldn't know what to do."
I hated it when people cried, I never know what to do. Not to mention, it was a boy so this was like, double jeopardy. I sprung up from the chair and wrapped my arms around him, hopping that this is the farthest his crying would do. He let out a shaky sigh before hugging back. He held on, but I think I needed the hug more than he did. I buried my face into his chest while he held on tight.
"I'm sorry, Eren." I mumbled.
"Just...why are you doing this? Why are you forgiving him?"
I paused before releasing the words. "My dad would have wanted it."
"Ex-fucking-cuse me?" Eren pulled away and looked down at me with an eyebrow raised. I couldn't help but chuckle at his reaction.
"Yeah," I nodded. "He always...he taught me that there's good in everyone. And to never give up on who you love...so I can't give up on Levi. He's realized his mistakes and I think...he deserves a second chance."
"You love him?"
"I like him a lot, but you get the point. He want to help me and make this better. He know he's fucked up. You should have seen him, Eren, he looked awful when I saw him the other day. I think he also wouldn't be able to live with himself if something happened to me."
Eren exhaled deeply through his nose, pushing back his messy brown locks. "Alright. Go ahead and trust the douchbag. But I swear, I'll kick his ass into next week if he pulls anything."
"Got it." I smiled. "Everything will be okay."
"I hope." He returned the smile, ruffling my curls. A yell was heard from the other room, capturing mine and Eren's attention. Moments later, Erwin rushed in, his eyes wide.
"It's Levi." He stated. "He's gone missing."
