this charming man; the smiths

-

It was a typical day at the office for Calum. Work sheets all over his desk, coffee rings in his dark wooden table and his hands and finger full of paper cuts and bruises.

"Ashton for the eleventh time" Calum sighed annoyed as he rubbed his temple "You don't need a lawyer for a parking ticket!"

"I mean... why not? i violated the law, Calum!" Ashton protested as he followed Calum into his office sitting down in one of his comfy leather chairs.

"Then why are you here exactly? Because if you can't take a hint I'm busy" he said gesturing to the huge pile of papers and work sheets on this desk.

"Yeah... I need your help" Ashton said in a low voice as if it was a secret or something bad. Ashton quickly got up and closed the door of Calum's office and sat back down to see a very worried Calum.

"I need your help, as a lawyer" he said briefly.

"Please tell me you didn't murder anybody" Calum whispered leaning in to Ashton. The buff man chuckled and shook his head in denial as Calums worries lifted off his back.

"God no, it's just that..." Ashton trailed off making the raven man behind the desk worry again "Michael is married and he-he is getting--wants a divorce, but doesn't know about a good lawyer, so i thought maybe you can help him out"

Calum sighed and smiled kindly "My god! you're making this a huge deal, i have done so many divorce cases, please Ashton, of course i'll help your boy-toy" Calum said clicking and un-clicking his metal pen.

"Thank you so much, Cal... I'm just ashamed, you know?" Ashton stood up walking towards the door and Calum walked him out saying "Hey! don't be".

Calum pulled up on his driveway and was tired and drained from work. He just wanted a nice drink and to have some rest and time for himself for once in years.

"Lilypad!, Mom! I have arrived" He yelled and squeals were echoed around the house as Lily cam running down down stairs and jumped towards Calum making him drop his briefcase and groan at the sudden weight.

"Hey Lilypad! how was your day?" he cooed and took a curl out of her face to see that beautiful smile of hers.

"It was good, how about yours?" she asked shimming out of Calum embrace, making him pout "Let me guess, you're tired and can't play with me" the little girl sassed as he was surprised at her sudden response.

Calum crouched down to her eye level and pouted "Why would you think that?"

"Cuz' it's what always happens and you come home all droopy eyed and when i ask you to play with me you say 'Lilypad I'm tired, maybe tomorrow'" she said mimicking his not so deep voice and frowning.

Calum sighed. It was true, he comes home tired as hell and all he wants to do is rest, but he knows he has a 7 year old to attend and care for; he can't sleep all day. It made him sad to know his baby girl was used to it, she was used to having a present father but a totally emotionally disconnected one.

"Where is grandma Joy?" he asked picking her up and walking up the stairs.

"'M here!" he heard Joy say from Lily's room. He opened the door and saw her mom placing Lily's school clothes in the drawers.

"Hey mom" he hugged her and kissed her cheek as Lily took her firetruck and rolled it around her blue and white carpet.

Calum asked the typical questions like: 'What did she eat?', 'Did she get in trouble?', 'Did she do her homework?', and 'How did she behave?'. Joy answered them all and he smiled looking at her cute baby doll.

"I made some pasta, it's in the fridge" Joy said collecting her keys and purse.

"Thanks mom, really, thanks for cooking, cleaning, and mostly for taking care of Lily, I really need the help because work and all--"

"It's okay, Cally, I'll always be here" Joy interrupted Calums rambling and he smiled at her fondly. They said their good-byes and parted ways.

He ran up the stairs and saw Lily's door closed, him being nosy, he peeked and saw her playing his her action figures and with her car toys. She never liked dolls or tutus or pink 'girl' things. Calum loved her for that.

He smiled and walked towards the bathroom and began to run her a bath. He poured extra bubble juice -- like  she like to call it -- and checked if the water was harm enough.

"Lily! you're bath is ready!"

"With extra bubble juice?!" she yelled back "Yeah".

He heard small stomping footsteps  and saw a smiling Lily with her toys. He helped her get out of her overalls and she splashed in without a care in the world.

"Dad! you lied!" she said crossing her arms.

"What! I did put extra bubble juice!, Lily we can't full up the tub with bubbles" he argued giggling at her sassy daughter. They played with her toys and he washed and brushed her pretty curls, it may have taken some time, she may have cried from all the pulling but in the end she ended up with a cute little braid.

"Sing for me dad" she said already smuggled up in her blue and white duvet. He laughed and nodded.

'Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I'm tired and I
I want to go to bed

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
And then leave me alone'

He sang softly as Lilys eyes grew tired and heavy

'Don't try to wake me in the morning
'Cause I will be gone
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I will feel so glad to go'

When he finished she was already deep in her sleep. He kissed her forehead and closed the door behind  him looking back at her and smiling very fondly.
