Bea rushed down a small slope, she could still hear the Compys chirping as they followed the trio like relentless creatures; the young woman was panting, her legs burning and her heart threatening to burst if she didn't come to a stop soon enough. Up ahead Bea could see a deepening into the ground, with one last look over her shoulder Bea jumped over the hole and landed on the other side with a cry of pain coming from her left knee as she tumbled forward and crashed on the floor with a dry thud.
"Oh god" hissed Bea as she tried to suck in some air, she glanced over her shoulder just to get a glimpse of Lowery heading to the hole she had just jumped "Lowery jump!"
Too late.
Lowery stumbled forward and crashed face first into the shallow hole, hitting his forehead harshly against an over exposed branch; Bea crawled towards Lowery, fearing the blow to the head had knocked him out just to find the tech man curling up in a ball, his arms covering his head as he muttered with pain under his breath.
"Lowery" whispered Bea, she extended her right hand as she stepped into the hole, "Lowery, are you ok?"
But before Lowery could answer, Andrew appeared from behind the trees, screaming with terror and dry blood over his face; Bea looked up just in time to cover her own head and face as Andrew's feet tumbled into the hole and his left knee landed with universal pain over Lowery's ankle and Lowery roared with pain as Andrew unintentionally wounded his leg.
Andrew screeched as his knee hit Lowery's ankle and he dropped to the right, his elbow hitting Bea's cheekbone as she uncovered her face as Lowery continued to scream.
"Fuck!" cried Bea, her hands flying up to cover her face; a hot sensation spreading from her cheek throughout her face and whole head as the pain started to linger. "Oh god" she closed her eyes as she felt tears of pain start to form in her eyes.
"I'm sorry" grunted Andrew as he pushed himself to a sitting position and turned to look at Bea, gently he took her wrists in his hands and uncovered her face, her cheek had turned bright red as the soft skin started to assimilate the blow. "I'm sorry" he whispered as Bea stared into his dark eyes.
"I'm fine" whispered Bea, she slowly pulled her wrists away from Andrew's grip, his face inches away from hers "I'm fine Andrew"
"Are you sure?" asked Andrew, he touched Bea's cheek but the young woman jerked back; the last thing she wanted was for this guy whom she didn't know to start touching her.
"Yeah, I'm sure" said Bea, with a frown and her cheek on fire, Bea turned around and pushed herself towards Lowery, who was still on the floor, his eyes closed and both his hands wrapped around his ankle. "Lowery" she whispered, her gentle hand landing over Lowery's shoulder "Let me see"
Lowery grunted something that Bea couldn't understand and the young woman forced herself to lean forward towards Lowery's face "What?" she whispered "Lowery you have to let me see you ankle to make sure it's not broken"
"Really Bea? You're a doctor now, to know if its not broken? When did you get your degree, dude?" she barked to herself, strangely enough it sounded more like Owen than Bea's voice. "God, I'm going insane now"
Bea took a deep breath and leaned forward as she heard the Compys chirping behind them as they walked through the bushes and watched from afar the scene before them.
"Lowery" whispered Bea again "You have to let me see, please"
Lowery grunted as he released his ankle and covered his face with both his hands, almost like an injured and scared child would do; Bea turned her attention to the ankle and slowly raised the jean to watched as Lowery's ankle had turned from flesh color to intense red.
"Shit" whispered Bea, she turned to Lowery, but he was still covering his face; she gulped and turned back to the ankle.
"Did he break it?" asked Andrew.
"You mean did you break it" Bea corrected in her mind. "No, I don't think it is"
"Good" said Andrew, Bea looked over her shoulder at the young man, he was sitting near Bea but was scanning the area to see if he could see the Compys.
"Good is not a word I would use" she hissed.
"Well, at least he can walk" pointed out Andrew as he turned to look at Bea.
"Yeah, in about an hour he might be able to stand up, but he isn't going to run a marathon any time soon" spat Bea, Andrew's face darkened.
Lowery grunted as he pushed himself to a sitting position, extending his injured leg forward next to Bea; the young woman looked around and then stood up.
"Where are you going?" asked Andrew.
"To look for a branch" answered Bea, she stepped out of the shallow hole and walked towards a few bushes, she heard the Compys scattering and snapping between each other, probably talking about the trio.
Bea walked a few more feet, not getting as far as to disappear from Andrew's and Lowery's view; the young woman bent down and her knees barked in pain, the last time she had felt so much pain in her legs had been almost three years ago and it had nothing to do with running away from dinosaurs. Bea grabbed a branch and stood up, she raised her left leg and placed the branch under it and kicked down, breaking the branch in two, with that the young woman turned back to Andrew and Lowery and rapidly walked towards them.
"What are you gonna do with that?" asked Andrew as he pointed at the branches "You can't fix his leg"
"You think I don't know that?" spat Bea, "But I'm trying to do something to help him"
Andrew rolled his eyes and watched as Bea knelt down next to Lowery and sighed, she looked at his over shirt and bit her lower lip.
"Can you rip part of the shirt off?" asked Bea, Lowery looked at her and nodded softly even though he didn't know if he could actually do it.
Lowery took a piece of his shirt and pulled, the fabric not even barking in protest to his effort of ripping it; Bea turned to look at Andrew and he stared back at her.
"What?" he asked.
"Could you be fucking useful?" barked Bea, she was scared, she was worried and now she had to help fix Lowery's leg that this guy had injured "You injured him and you are sitting there doing nothing"
"Bea" whispered Lowery.
"No!" barked Bea "Help me rip his shirt!"
Andrew clenched his jaw but crawled towards Lowery and grabbed his shirt, with a forceful pull he ripped a string off the shirt and tossed it to Bea.
"There" he barked "Happy?"
"No" answered Bea "But it's something"
"What now?" asked Lowery
"Well" whispered Bea as she placed one of the branched against the left side of Lowery's ankle "I know its gonna hurt but we have to keep moving, those Compys are waiting for us and we need to find shelter" she looked up at Lowery "This might hurt"
"Just do it, I don't like being out here in the open"
Bea nodded and as she placed the second branch at the right side of Lowery's ankle she wrapped the shirt around it and tied it tight as Lowery held in a grunt as Bea tied a second knot.
"Can we go now?" asked Andrew.
Bea turned to him and shot him a killer glare, "No, give him twenty minutes you almost broke his leg, dude"
As Andrew rolled his eyes and Bea helped Lowery sit down straight, the Compys scattered to the north as an almost imperceptible snarl announced the income of a far more dangerous creature than the Compys; and if Bea had been alert to threats she might have been able to make out the familiar sound.
